Although the monthly figure represented a slight decline compared with the same period a year earlier, the airport continued to demonstrate resilience with international passenger growth and steady long-term expansion.

The July passenger performance included 616,247 domestic travellers and 57,166 international passengers. Domestic traffic experienced a modest decline compared with July 2025, while international travel continued its upward trend, recording a 0.4% increase year-on-year.

For the first seven months of 2026, Ontario International Airport served 4,085,992 passengers, marking a 1.3% increase compared with the same period in 2025 when the airport handled 4,032,410 travellers. The growth was largely supported by a significant rise in international passenger demand, which surged by 36.9% year-to-date.

Between January and July, the airport recorded 403,385 international passengers, compared with 294,623 during the same period in 2025. This represents an increase of nearly 109,000 international travellers and highlights growing demand for overseas connections from Southern California.

In July alone, international passenger numbers reached 57,166, slightly higher than the 56,945 recorded in July 2025. While the monthly increase was moderate, the continued positive movement reflects the airport’s expanding international presence and the rising preference among travellers for convenient alternatives to larger regional airports.

Domestic travel remained the foundation of ONT’s passenger operations, accounting for the majority of traffic. However, domestic passenger volumes recorded a small decline during July and across the year-to-date period.

July domestic passenger numbers reached 616,247, compared with 624,958 in July 2025, representing a 1.4% decrease. Year-to-date domestic traffic stood at 3,682,607 passengers, compared with 3,737,787 during the first seven months of 2025, reflecting a 1.5% decline.

Despite the minor domestic slowdown, the airport’s overall passenger performance remained positive due to international growth and continued demand for air services.

Southwest Airlines Leads Passenger Traffic at Ontario International Airport

Airline activity at Ontario International Airport continued to show a competitive market structure, with several major carriers contributing significantly to passenger movement during July.

Southwest Airlines remained the largest carrier at ONT, accounting for the biggest share of passenger traffic with 34.4% of total travellers during the month. The airline’s strong presence continues to support domestic connectivity from the airport.

American Airlines ranked second among carriers, representing 14.8% of July passenger traffic. Frontier Airlines followed with an 11.9% share, while Alaska Airlines accounted for 11.1% of passengers. Delta Air Lines completed the top five carriers with a 9.4% share.

The airline distribution reflects ONT’s position as a growing alternative airport for travellers seeking efficient access to Southern California while avoiding congestion at larger airports.

Total air cargo volume reached 75,222 tonnes in July 2026, representing a 3.5% increase compared with the 72,645 tonnes handled during July 2025.

Year-to-date cargo performance showed even stronger growth. Between January and July 2026, ONT processed 503,439 tonnes of cargo, up 7% from 470,469 tonnes during the same period in 2025.

Freight operations remained the primary driver of cargo expansion. July freight volume reached 63,993 tonnes, compared with 61,803 tonnes in July 2025, representing a 3.5% annual increase.

For the first seven months of 2026, freight activity climbed significantly to 432,916 tonnes, compared with 393,505 tonnes during the same period a year earlier. This represents a 10% year-to-date increase and highlights the airport’s increasing importance in regional and international supply chains.

Mail volumes also recorded monthly growth, reaching 11,229 tonnes in July 2026 compared with 10,842 tonnes in July 2025. This marked a 3.6% increase. However, year-to-date mail activity declined by 8.4%, falling from 76,962 tonnes in 2025 to 70,523 tonnes in 2026.

The combination of rising freight demand and continued cargo growth demonstrates ONT’s evolving role beyond passenger aviation. The airport has become an important logistics gateway supporting businesses, e-commerce activity and supply chain operations across Southern California.
