Today, Rio Tinto, a Global mining company and UNESCO have decided to start an all-inclusive longstanding collaboration that is precisely designed to grow initiatives in terms of sustainable development in Mongolia.
In Ulaanbaatar, the signing ceremony was held, and the parties over there declared about their first joint project, aimed on encouraging sustainable tourism with the help of cultural and geo-heritage campaigns in Mongolia – home to numerous attractions that are UNESCO world heritage sites and Oyu Tolgoi copper project of Rio Tinto. By balancing the expertise and resources of both of them, this exclusive partnership targets to simplify the foundation of the first geopark of Mongolia at supporting geological science as well.
The Director of UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office for East Asia, Prof. Shahbaz Khan, said that this partnership indicates a promise to the shared values of sustainable development and shows a cooperative commitment to nurturing responsible practices in mining, guaranteeing that financial growth goes hand in hand with the fortification of the most exceptional heritage and treasures of humanity on Earth.
UNESCO, Rio Tinto Mongolia and the Government of Mongolia, by joining forces, will strengthen the involvement of Mongolia in the International Geosciences and Geoparks Program to encourage the study of geosciences and geological processes.
