Rovaniemi, the “official hometown” of Santa Claus, has become a holiday hotspot, drawing comparisons to overtourism-plagued destinations like Barcelona and Amsterdam.

The Santa Claus Village, a winter-themed amusement park in Finnish Lapland, attracts over 600,000 visitors annually, with numbers soaring during the Christmas season.

While tourists revel in snowy reindeer sleigh rides and ice bars, locals are raising alarms over the rapid growth of tourism.

“This is like my dream come true,” said Polish visitor Elzbieta Nazaruk, summing up the excitement shared by many visitors.

However, for the 63,000 residents of Rovaniemi, the holiday influx—nearly ten times the town’s population—is increasingly overwhelming.

“Tourism has grown so rapidly, it’s no longer in control,” said local photographer and activist Antti Pakkanen, who recently participated in a rally organized to address the issue.

Concerns include the transformation of the city center into a transient space dominated by short-term rentals, which has driven up housing costs and displaced long-term residents.

Rovaniemi recorded 1.2 million overnight stays in 2023, up 30% from 2022, fueled by post-pandemic travel recovery and the allure of snowy landscapes, Northern Lights, and Santa Claus.

Thirteen new flight routes to Rovaniemi Airport—connecting cities like Geneva, Berlin, and Bordeaux—have further boosted visitor numbers.

“Nordic is a trend,” said Visit Rovaniemi CEO Sanna Karkkainen, highlighting the region’s growing appeal. However, local critics argue that stricter enforcement of Finland’s residential building laws is needed to curb the proliferation of short-term rentals.

While Mayor Ulla-Kirsikka Vainio acknowledges the economic benefits of tourism, the strain on local infrastructure and quality of life remains a pressing issue.

Despite ongoing debates, new regulations are unlikely before the winter season, leaving Rovaniemi to grapple with an ever-growing wave of holidaymakers.

As the world’s fascination with the Arctic and Santa Claus endures, Rovaniemi faces a delicate balancing act: preserving its unique charm while addressing the challenges of overtourism.

For now, the town braces for another record-breaking Christmas season, even as locals call for sustainable tourism solutions.
