In a recent and alarming incident, a UTAir Boeing-737, carrying 109 passengers, was forced to make an emergency landing in Moscow due to a malfunction in its wing flaps. What made this situation even more disconcerting was the revelation that the plane was transporting 19kg of radioactive material to Khanty-Mansiysk in western Siberia. Despite the unexpected descent, the hazardous cargo remained undamaged, having received special permission from the Kremlin for transportation.
Khanty-Mansiysk, the intended destination, carries historical significance as the site of underground Soviet nuclear tests in the 1980s. This event adds to a concerning trend of frequent plane emergencies in Russia, with multiple incidents reported in a short span.
In a separate occurrence, a military An-12 aircraft made an emergency landing at Khurba airport in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, while a Superjet SSJ-100 had to return to Yakutsk due to landing gear issues. Another distressing incident involved a plane with 111 passengers experiencing sudden depressurization, causing panic among passengers.
The series of emergencies extends to engine troubles, notably in a Boeing 737 with micro-explosions, resulting in fires in both engines and an emergency landing. A Tu-204 cargo aircraft also suffered an engine “explosion” during takeoff from Ulan-Ude, further contributing to heightened concerns about aviation safety.
Experts speculate that Western sanctions may be impacting the maintenance of Russian planes, leading to difficulties in obtaining spare parts. Reports suggest that since spring 2022, airlines are refraining from logging equipment defects in flight log books, raising questions about the transparency of safety measures.
The surge in air incidents is particularly worrisome, with 120 accidents involving Russian airlines in the first eight months of the year, more than double the average in recent years. This trend persists despite a reduction in flights due to geopolitical factors, highlighting the urgency of addressing aviation safety concerns in Russia.
