Ryanair, the leading airline in the UK, has once again called for the resignation or removal of NATS CEO Martin Rolfe, following the recent collapse of the Gatwick Air Traffic Control (ATC) system on December 9th. This incident resulted in significant delays for hundreds of flights and inconvenienced thousands of passengers at London Gatwick airport.
This failure by NATS marks the second such incident in just over three months, with the previous system failure occurring under Martin Rolfe’s leadership on August 28th. These recurrent breakdowns highlight the need for Martin Rolfe, the overpaid CEO, to step down or be dismissed.
Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary expressed frustration, stating that after the August NATS system failure, Rolfe dismissed it as a one-in-15-million technical glitch. However, the recurrence of the issue at Gatwick demonstrates a failure in leadership. O’Leary emphasized the impact on passengers facing prolonged delays, diversions, and cancellations due to NATS’ incompetence under Rolfe’s guidance. With an annual package exceeding £1.5 million, O’Leary labeled Rolfe as incompetent and called for his resignation. If Rolfe refuses to step down, O’Leary suggested that Transport Minister Mark Harper, who owns 50% of NATS, should take action and terminate Rolfe. O’Leary highlighted that these repeated system failures are unique to the UK and do not occur in any other European ATC service. He urged for the appointment of a competent individual to oversee the UK ATC, emphasizing that Rolfe has consistently proven incapable of delivering such competence.
