Saudi Arabia has unveiled ambitious plans to introduce flying taxis, aiming to transform the travel experience for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims by providing an on-demand service to Makkah. These aerial vehicles are set to depart from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, destined for airstrips situated in close proximity to the sacred sites within the city.

This innovative transportation solution is designed to offer a quick and convenient journey to Makkah, effectively bringing the city within a short flight’s distance for pilgrims and visitors alike.

Operated by Saudia, the kingdom’s flagship carrier, the initiative involves the acquisition of approximately 100 aircraft to ensure the smooth running of this cutting-edge service. The chosen model for these flying taxis is the Lilium jet, a product of German engineering known for its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) capabilities. These aircraft are slated to facilitate transit between Jeddah’s Abdulaziz International Airport and the vicinity of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, where accommodations are primarily located.

Lilium jets stand out as pioneering fully electric-powered aircraft, designed to accommodate four to six passengers. They boast a distinct cabin layout, offering various seating configurations and ample space to guarantee a premium travel experience for their esteemed passengers. Beyond the luxury and innovation, these flying taxis are celebrated for their environmental benefits and their ability to cover distances up to 250 kilometers, promising a sustainable mode of transport that could significantly reduce travel time.

Looking to the future, Saudi Arabia’s vision extends to integrating these flying taxis into a broader network, linking them with several other key destinations. This network will encompass major airports across which Saudia Airlines operates, further expanding the reach and convenience of this revolutionary service.

The introduction of flying taxis in Saudi Arabia is poised to have a profound impact on tourism, particularly for those embarking on religious pilgrimages to Makkah. This service not only promises to make the journey quicker and more convenient but also aligns with global sustainability goals by utilizing electric-powered aircraft.

The deployment of these flying taxis is expected to enhance the overall experience for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, potentially increasing the number of visitors able to partake in these spiritual journeys. Moreover, by expanding this service to connect with other destinations, Saudi Arabia is likely to see a boost in its tourism sector, attracting a wider audience interested in experiencing this innovative mode of travel.
