In a relief to the tourism sector, Sikkim reopened for tourism from October 10 (Saturday). The Prem Singh Tamang government has allowed hotels, homestays and other tourism-related services to restart operations from the above-mentioned date.

The bookings for hotels and homestays had started from September 27.
The Himalayan state has categorically stated that all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) announced by the central and the state governments should be put in place by hotels and all tourism-related activities.

Notably, the odd-even rule for all public transports was removed from after October 1. However, the restrictions continue for private vehicles.

Taking a cue from Delhi, which had first implemented odd-even rule Delhi to tackle air pollution, the same was imposed by the Sikkim administration to reduce movement amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The union home ministry on September 30 issued Unlock 5.0 guidelines, allowing cinemas, theatres and multiplexes to open with upto 50 per cent of their seating capacity from October 15. Activities such as Business to Business (B2B) Exhibitions, social, political and religious gatherings with a ceiling of 100 people outside containment zones with strict implementation of COVID-19 protocol have also been permitted. The union home ministry in its order said that that ‘only a maximum of 50 per cent of the hall capacity with a ceiling of 200 persons and mandatory wearing of face masks is must for gatherings’.

The central government has specifically stated that lockdown will continue to remain in force in the containment zones across the country. The central government reiterated that children below 10 years of age, persons above 65 years of age, and people with co-morbidities, pregnant women should remain at home, except for essential and health purposes.
