Travelers landing at Singapore’s Changi Airport can now enjoy a seamless experience with the new token-less clearance system. This exciting upgrade lets eligible passengers enter the country without a physical passport, relying instead on advanced biometric technology, including eye and facial recognition. It’s all about making travel smoother, faster, and more convenient.

Right now, the system is being tested at Terminal 3, where passengers can clear immigration using just their biometric data. By December 2024, the program will expand across all of Changi’s terminals, Seletar Airport, and even the Marina Bay Cruise Centre.

Singapore citizens, permanent residents, and long-term pass holders can take advantage of this program, skipping the hassle of carrying physical passports. Foreign travelers can also use biometric clearance when departing, but they’ll need to register their biometrics—iris, facial, and fingerprints—at manual immigration counters first. For now, kids under six won’t be part of the biometric system.

This program is a major part of Singapore’s New Clearance Concept, launched back in May. Officials are aiming for 95% of travelers to use automated lanes by early 2026, eliminating the need for traditional passport checks. According to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), this technology could cut immigration wait times by up to 40%, making the travel experience even better. In just the first 15 days of the program, 1.5 million passengers had already benefited.

Changi Airport’s numbers also show its rise as a global hub. In September 2024, the airport handled 5.4 million passengers—a 10.8% increase compared to the same month in 2023. This impressive growth reflects the airport’s readiness for this new technological leap.

ICA Commander Alan Koo shared that this new system will allow staff to focus on more critical tasks like security profiling, which is especially important as traveler numbers grow and the workforce ages.

Foreign visitors still need to present passports upon arrival, but they can enjoy the ease of passport-free clearance when departing. The ICA also emphasizes the importance of carrying passports for checks at your destination, ensuring smooth international travel.

With Changi Airport leading the way, this groundbreaking biometric clearance system promises to not only enhance the travel experience in Singapore but also set a new standard for airports worldwide.
