Sri Lanka’s tourism officials are aware of the dire need to support their country’s economy. They areconsidering attracting a greater number of Indian tourists, who comprise the single largest section of foreign tourists to the island nation, with the help of new packages like the Murugan-Shiva Shakthi trails.

The hope of Sri Lanka’s tourism officials comes from the fact that there is a suggestion to recommence air passenger facilities from the Palaly airport in Jaffna to various places in the southern part of India.

As part of the Murugan trail, two significant places — NallurKandaswamy or Murugan temple in Jaffna of the Northern Province and Kataragama of the Uva Province in the southeast have been incorporated.

ChalakaGajabahu, the chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, the 25-day-long festival in Nalluris expected to attractmore than a million enthusiasts, including 1,00,000 from the diaspora. A “special calendar” of events is also getting prepared for the Hindu devotees.

Mr. Gajabahusaid that they arevigorously promoting the North on trade FAMs [familiarization trips]. The East would also receive more focus considering its varied cultural implication that included Islam. However, he acknowledgedthe fact that the marketing of the North had not been done appropriately. Although Indian tourists comprised the biggest portion of foreign tourists, Mr. Gajabahustressed that several steps are being taken to attract even more.
