The proposal to set up six floating pods in St Helier Marina has been approved, with the Ports of Jersey expressing optimism about inaugurating the initial two pods during this summer season. These pods are intended to serve as short-term lodging for visiting yacht owners and local residents.
Positioned between the Lifeboat Café and the St Helier RNLI lifeboat station, the pods are designed to include a bedroom, living area, bathroom, and a utility closet. Additionally, guests will have access to balconies on either side, offering views of the pontoon and the harbor. The dimensions of the pods are anticipated to be approximately 4 meters in width and 5.5 meters in length.
Kirsten Morel, the Economic Development Minister, has expressed his support for the initiative, emphasizing its alignment with recent tourism strategies that prioritize innovative and novel accommodations over conventional hotel offerings. The recent elimination of minimum size requirements for tourist lodgings has made it feasible for visitors to stay in these huts.
The planning application detailed measures to ensure the pods’ stability during high tides by anchoring them securely to the pontoon, which is deemed sufficiently robust. The Ports of Jersey team has committed to overseeing the reservation process to circumvent the challenges posed by extreme tidal conditions.
The proposal has also received endorsement from Tricia Warwick, the CEO of Visit Jersey, who conveyed her support through a letter. Public feedback on the application included one endorsement, contingent on the pods being constructed to contemporary standards of thermal efficiency. Conversely, another comment suggested utilizing the area for additional mooring space instead.
