The Shodoshima Tourism Association (STA) sponsored a three-day GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training for tourism stakeholders in Shodoshima Kagawa, Japan, held from December 20th to 22nd, 2023. The training, conducted in Japanese, was led by GSTC Trainers Kazuhiro Arai, Representative of Daisetsuzan Nature School, and Koji Miwa, Policy Researcher at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), who shared their expertise through practical examples and valuable insights.

Participants had the opportunity to visit the Olivean Shodoshima Yuhigaoka Hotel, situated in the scenic Seto Inland Sea, where they gained firsthand knowledge of the hotel’s sustainable initiatives in areas such as kitchen management, guest rooms, and waste storage.

Additionally, the Shodoshima participants visited Shodoshima Olive Park, a Greek-style park atop a hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. The park, featuring over 2,000 olive trees and more than 130 types of herbs, provided insights into Cyclical Agriculture and Olive functionalities.

The GSTC Sustainable Tourism Course equipped participants with essential knowledge and skills to promote sustainable tourism practices. The training delved into the GSTC Criteria, global standards for sustainability in tourism and travel, and incorporated global and local case studies to enhance its value.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate of completion and become eligible to take an optional official exam to obtain the GSTC Professional Certificate in Sustainable Tourism.
