Train services on several Scottish lines will commence later than usual on Thursday morning due to safety measures implemented following Storm Pia.

Anticipating wind speeds of up to 80mph in certain areas overnight, thorough inspections are required on some rail lines before resuming passenger services.

The possibility of high winds causing obstructions such as trees and debris on the tracks, potentially damaging trains, necessitates cautionary safety assessments.

The following lines will open only after completion of safety checks:

Speed restrictions will be enforced on the Highland Mainline and certain routes in the central belt, south-west Scotland, and cross-border routes.

Additional engineers will be deployed to swiftly address any identified damage, utilizing engineering trains for a prompt inspection of affected lines.

Passengers are advised to allocate more time for their travel and consult their train operator for updates before embarking on their journey.

Liam Sumpter, Route Director for Network Rail Scotland, emphasized the priority of customer and staff safety, leading to the temporary suspension of some services and the implementation of reduced speeds.

Sumpter stated, “High winds can pose risks to our infrastructure by causing debris to fall onto tracks, potentially damaging our system. It is imperative that we thoroughly evaluate the impact of severe weather conditions before resuming operations and lifting restrictions. We aim to restore affected routes promptly but urge passengers to verify their travel plans.”

David Simpson, ScotRail’s Service Delivery Director, acknowledged significant service disruptions due to Storm Pia. Simpson emphasized the likelihood of cancellations and unforeseen alterations on the most affected routes, urging passengers to expect extended travel times.

“Simpson emphasized our close collaboration with Network Rail Scotland to minimize disturbances and ensure continuous passenger movement. Despite our efforts, we suggest travelers prepare for extended journey durations and utilize the ScotRail app, website, or social media platforms to verify their travel arrangements.”
