Several airlines such as SAS and Aegean Airlines, along with the transport and logistics giant DHL, have inked agreements with Swedavia to engage in the sustainable aviation incentive program for 2023. Under this initiative, Swedavia provides airlines and other stakeholders a discount of up to 50% on premium costs for opting to refuel with sustainable aviation fuel. The program’s first application phase for the current year commenced in January, welcoming more industry participants. In 2024, the incentive program allocates a total of SEK 40 million across three application periods, with market share serving as the primary criterion in the initial phase.

“Various aviation actors are helping to accelerate the transition work. We can see this not least through increased interest in the SAF incentive programme, where Swedavia offers discounts to airlines that choose to refuel with renewable aviation fuel. At Swedavia, we are also seeing an increased ambition among our partners as the industry continues to reset and invest in new initiatives in the wake of the pandemic. The ongoing recovery in air travel is taking place in parallel with the continued ambitious transition work, and Swedavia is raising its level of ambition further by doubling the pot in the programme for the second year in a row. Reducing dependence on fossil fuels is an important part of the transition, and the incentive programme is an important piece of the puzzle”, says Charlotte Ljunggren, director of marketing and commercial development at Swedavia.

Swedavia is committed to fostering sustainable air travel, having achieved complete fossil-free operations in 2020, utilizing fossil-free HVO100 diesel across its airports. To support airlines in their transition efforts, Swedavia introduced the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Incentive Discount Programme in 2020, aiming to encourage sustainable refueling practices. By engaging in this program, airlines and aviation operators can mitigate their climate impact and contribute to the crucial climate transition in the aviation sector. Swedavia advocates for a significant increase in fossil-free fuel production in Sweden, foreseeing potential job creation.

In 2024, Swedavia continues its SAF Incentive Programme for the fifth consecutive year, offering a total of SEK 40 million, mirroring the previous year’s allocation. All airlines operating scheduled and/or charter flights from any of Swedavia’s ten airports are eligible to participate.

Through this initiative, Swedavia subsidizes up to 50% of the premium cost for airlines refueling with renewable aviation fuel, with a minimum cost threshold of SEK 125,000, equivalent to a premium cost of at least SEK 250,000 for participating airlines. Airlines interested in joining the program must apply to Swedavia. Based on application review and available funds, Swedavia allocates the appropriate amount to each applicant.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is fossil-free and derived from renewable sources like used cooking oil and residual waste, reducing fossil carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80% from a lifecycle perspective. Blended at levels of up to 50% with traditional fuel, SAF can be seamlessly integrated into existing fueling systems and infrastructure at airports.

Since 2016, Swedavia has procured sustainable aviation fuel equivalent to its annual corporate travel needs. From 2019, Swedavia has collaborated with both the public and private sectors on joint procurement initiatives for sustainable aviation fuel. In 2024, the Västra Götaland Regional Council, SOS Alarm, and the Port of Gothenburg are participating partners, collectively securing 292 tonnes of fossil-free biofuel, a notable increase from the previous year.
