In February, Swedavia’s ten airports witnessed nearly 2.2 million passengers, marking a 4 percent rise compared to February last year. The surge primarily stems from international travel, which saw an 8 percent uptick during the month. This increase can be attributed in part to heightened winter holiday travel, notably from Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Göteborg Landvetter Airport, Umeå Airport, and Åre Östersund Airport. As we gear up for the summer traffic season starting in late March/early April, Swedavia’s airports are poised to accommodate the surge in connectivity. Approximately 25 new routes have been added so far, including 10 entirely new destinations.

“Traffic has been characterized by strong winter holiday traffic at our major airports, as well as our regional airports in the north. International travel increased 8 per cent compared to February last year, while domestic traffic declined, though at a slower rate than the previous month”, says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia’s president and CEO.

“Despite uncertainties related to the weak economy, inflation and in the surrounding world, travel continues to be a priority. Ahead of the summer traffic season, which starts at the end of March, our range of routes and destinations will be further strengthened with the addition of almost 25 routes. This includes significant improvements in connectivity to North America,” says Jonas Abrahamsson.

Over the next few months, numerous new routes will debut as part of the airlines’ summer traffic initiatives, expanding both the number of routes and destinations across Swedavia’s airports. Stockholm Arlanda and Gothenburg will each see substantial additions, with almost 14 new routes from Arlanda and 8 from Gothenburg, featuring around ten fresh destinations. Notable among these are SAS’s forthcoming routes connecting Arlanda to Seville and Kalamata, Norwegian’s links between Arlanda-Bari and Landvetter-Dubrovnik, Transavia FR’s Arlanda-Marseille service, and Ryanair’s Landvetter-Sarajevo route.

Furthermore, North American connectivity will receive a boost, with nearly 30 weekly departures and up to 5 daily departures from Stockholm Arlanda. Commencing April 10th (Delta Air Lines), June 6th (United Airlines), and June 13th (Air Canada), Air Canada, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines will offer routes to Toronto, Montreal, and New York, supplementing SAS’s existing services between Arlanda and Toronto/New York.

In February, Swedavia’s ten airports welcomed approximately 2.2 million passengers, marking a 4 percent rise from February 2023. International travel surged by 8 percent to over 1.5 million passengers, while domestic travel dipped by 6 percent to just over 600,000 passengers. Overall, February’s passenger traffic reached approximately 77 percent of the levels recorded in February 2019, pre-pandemic.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport saw nearly 1.5 million passengers in February, reflecting a 7 percent increase over the previous year. International travel notably rose by 11 percent to 1.2 million passengers, while domestic travel experienced a 6 percent decline to nearly 300,000 passengers, totaling 84 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

In February, Göteborg Landvetter Airport witnessed a nearly 7 percent increase in passenger traffic compared to February 2023, totaling almost 330,000 passengers. International travel experienced a notable surge, rising by 9 percent to accommodate 285,000 passengers, while domestic travel saw a decline of 9 percent, accommodating just over 43,000 passengers. January saw passenger numbers at Göteborg Landvetter reach 75 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

February’s air travel trends varied among Swedavia’s other airports. Kiruna witnessed the most substantial growth, with nearly 26,000 passengers, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Following Kiruna, Ronneby, Åre Östersund, and Umeå demonstrated the most significant passenger growth in February compared to the same period last year. Conversely, Malmö, Bromma Stockholm, and Luleå airports reported the weakest growth.
