United Airlines is widening its international network across Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe in 2026. The airline will launch San Francisco–Sapporo on 12 December, while Caracas, Cartagena, St. Croix and Tuxtla Gutiérrez are planned as new destinations later in the year. Additional announced routes include Chicago–Tokyo Narita, Washington Dulles–Los Cabos, Denver–Providenciales and Houston–Santo Domingo. United has also already launched new European services to Bari, Split, Santiago de Compostela, Glasgow and Reykjavik, showing a broad strategy focused on both leisure and long-haul international travel growth.

San Francisco–Sapporo Creates a New US to Japan Travel Link

The most detailed upcoming route is United’s nonstop service between San Francisco and New Chitose Airport, which serves Sapporo and Hokkaido.

Flights are scheduled to operate from 12 December 2026 through 27 March 2027. United plans three flights each week in each direction. UA235 will leave New Chitose at 16:15 on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays and arrive in San Francisco at 08:20. UA234 will depart San Francisco at 10:30 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and reach New Chitose at 14:15 the following day.

The seasonal timing places the route directly into Hokkaido’s winter travel period. For travellers, it creates another direct transpacific option between California and northern Japan without requiring a Tokyo connection.

United’s official Japan site already lists San Francisco services from Narita, Haneda, Kansai and Sapporo, with the Sapporo operation scheduled through late March 2027.

Chicago Gets Another Tokyo Connection

United has also announced a new route linking Chicago O’Hare with Tokyo Narita.

The airline already operates daily Chicago–Tokyo Haneda service using Boeing 787-10 aircraft. Its published Tokyo schedule also includes Narita services from Denver, Newark, Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Adding Chicago–Narita will therefore deepen United’s Japan network rather than open Japan to Chicago for the first time.

United’s Q2 2026 release confirms the Chicago–Narita plan, but does not give a final operating start date in that announcement.

Caribbean and Latin America Expansion Widens the Network

United’s late-2026 expansion also reaches the Caribbean, Mexico and South America.

The airline has announced five new destinations including Caracas, Cartagena, St. Croix and Tuxtla Gutiérrez. It has separately announced Washington Dulles–Los Cabos, Denver–Providenciales and Houston–Santo Domingo routes.

For travellers, these additions spread United’s network across leisure, cultural and business destinations rather than concentrating expansion in one region.

The exact operating schedules for all of these routes were not provided in the Q2 announcement, so individual launch dates should not be stated until United publishes them.

United Has Already Added New European Destinations in 2026

Europe is another major part of the carrier’s 2026 network strategy.

During the second quarter, United began operating from New York/Newark to:

  • Bari, Italy
  • Split, Croatia
  • Santiago de Compostela, Spain
  • Glasgow, Scotland

It also launched Washington Dulles–Reykjavik service.

United had announced the four Newark routes as part of its summer 2026 programme and said it planned service to 46 cities across the Atlantic during 2026.

For tourism, the destinations are significant because Bari, Split and Santiago de Compostela connect United travellers with important Mediterranean, Adriatic and pilgrimage markets alongside established major European capitals.

United Is Supporting Expansion With New Aircraft and Premium Capacity

Network expansion is being matched by changes to the fleet and onboard product.

United has begun deploying its new premium-configured Boeing 787-9 interior on San Francisco routes to Singapore and London. The aircraft contains 99 premium seats, including eight Polaris Studio suites and 56 Polaris business-class seats.

United also says its first Airbus A321XLR is expected to enter domestic service in autumn 2026 before starting international flying in early 2027.

United’s Global Network Now Reaches More Than 370 Destinations

United says its network serves more than 370 destinations across six continents and operates more than 5,000 daily departures through seven major US hubs: Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark/New York, San Francisco and Washington Dulles.

The airline says it helps around 175 million customers travel each year.

That scale makes the 2026 route additions more than isolated launches. Sapporo strengthens United’s transpacific network, the new Chicago–Narita service deepens US–Japan connectivity, Caribbean and Latin American additions widen leisure and regional travel choices, while the new European routes extend the carrier into destinations beyond traditional gateway cities.
