Starting in October, KLM is rolling out Grand Café KLM, a new way to enjoy inflight dining as it transforms the European flight catering experience. Passengers will have an improved inflight dining experience with more options and more control. With the new changes, customers will choose what they want before takeoff. Once onboard, passengers can choose to order food from an extended inflight menu.

The introduction of Grand Café KLM comes as European full-service airlines continue adapting their services to meet changing passenger expectations. Modern travellers increasingly look for personalised experiences, greater variety and the ability to customise different parts of their journey. With this new concept, KLM aims to offer a more flexible service model that combines traditional hospitality with additional food choices.

Under the new system, passengers will have the opportunity to pre-order selected meals before their flight. This option will allow travellers to plan their onboard dining experience in advance and enjoy specially prepared meals during their journey. Available choices will include popular dishes such as a poke bowl and a Caesar salad, providing passengers with fresh and convenient meal alternatives.

For those who prefer to make their choice during the flight, KLM will introduce an expanded onboard menu featuring a range of additional food and beverage products. Passengers will be able to purchase items including a salmon egg wrap and yogurt with fruit and seeds. The wider selection is designed to cater to different preferences, whether travellers are looking for a light snack, a healthier option or a more filling meal during their flight.

Alongside these new paid options, KLM will maintain its complimentary onboard service for passengers travelling on European routes. The free offering will continue to include essential refreshments such as coffee, tea, water and orange juice. Travellers will also continue to receive the airline’s well-known Dutch stroopwafel, a traditional snack that has become a familiar part of the KLM flying experience.

The Grand Café KLM concept represents a shift towards a more customer-focused approach to short-haul European travel. Rather than offering limited standard choices, the airline is creating a service model where passengers can decide how they want to experience their journey. Some travellers may prefer the convenience of booking a meal before take-off, while others may appreciate the freedom to select items directly from the onboard menu.

The new concept also supports the broader evolution of airline catering across Europe. Full-service carriers are increasingly introducing flexible dining solutions that combine complimentary hospitality with optional premium products. This approach allows airlines to provide more variety while responding to different passenger expectations, from business travellers seeking convenience to leisure travellers looking for more enjoyable flight experiences.

KLM’s focus on improving onboard services is part of its wider effort to enhance the overall passenger journey. Beyond flight schedules and connectivity, airlines are increasingly competing through service quality, comfort and personalised experiences. Food and beverage offerings have become an important element of this strategy, helping airlines create a stronger connection with passengers.

With Grand Café KLM, passengers flying within Europe will experience a refreshed onboard environment that blends choice, comfort and Dutch hospitality. The concept is expected to give travellers more opportunities to personalise their journey while maintaining the familiar service elements that have long been associated with KLM.

“We are delighted to welcome our passengers to Grand Café KLM,” said Bas Gerressen, EVP Inflight Services. “With this new concept, we are taking the next step in enhancing the European travel experience. Passengers will benefit from greater choice, more flexibility, and an offering that better reflects a wide range of preferences and needs. Whether they choose to pre-order a meal or spontaneously select a snack or beverage onboard, Grand Café KLM allows passengers to tailor the service to their personal preferences. In doing so, this new concept further strengthens the warm and hospitable experience we strive to provide.”

KLM had earlier announced that it was examining a new catering model designed specifically for Economy Class passengers as part of its efforts to modernise the onboard experience. Following the announcement, the airline conducted several testing phases on different European routes to understand passenger preferences and evaluate the practical aspects of introducing the new service.

The testing process focused on both the range of food and beverage choices offered to travellers and the operational procedures needed to deliver the service efficiently. By reviewing customer feedback and assessing onboard processes, KLM aimed to develop a catering concept that provides greater flexibility while maintaining smooth operations across its extensive European network.

The introduction of the new catering approach is part of KLM’s broader strategy to improve every stage of the passenger journey. The airline has been investing in multiple areas, including aircraft upgrades, cabin improvements and digital services, to meet the evolving expectations of modern travellers.

As part of its fleet renewal programme, KLM has already introduced 16 Airbus A321neo aircraft and 25 Embraer 195-E2 aircraft. These newer aircraft feature upgraded cabin interiors designed to improve passenger comfort, including modern seats equipped with USB charging ports and larger overhead bins that provide additional storage space.

Beyond physical cabin improvements, KLM has also focused on enhancing connectivity for passengers. The airline recently launched complimentary Wi-Fi on European flights, allowing travellers to stay connected during their journeys and access online services while flying.

Together, these investments demonstrate KLM’s continued focus on creating a more comfortable, convenient and technology-driven travel experience. By combining upgraded aircraft, improved connectivity and expanded onboard services, the airline is working to strengthen its position in the competitive European aviation market while responding to changing passenger expectations.
