In a groundbreaking move towards fostering closer ties and enhancing tourism collaboration, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin of Thailand has unveiled ambitious plans for seamless tourism between Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. This announcement follows a strategic meeting with the leaders of these neighboring countries on the sidelines of a Tokyo summit commemorating 50 years of Japan-ASEAN cooperation.

During a productive discussion with Vietnam President Vo Van Thuong, both leaders concurred on the resumption of Cabinet meetings, with the first scheduled for May next year in Vietnam. A key agenda item will focus on devising rice pricing strategies to uplift the income of farmers in the region. President Võ proposed a collaborative effort to promote seamless tourism, allowing travelers to move freely between Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia without the hassle of obtaining separate visas.

The Thai Prime Minister also engaged in talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, exploring the establishment of a Thai consulate in Siem Reap to support the rising number of tourists visiting the iconic Angkor Wat temple complex.

In a parallel development, Srettha confirmed Indonesia’s significant purchase of 2 million tonnes of Thai rice during discussions with Indonesian President Joko Widodo. This surge in rice exports is attributed to adverse weather conditions, including drought and the El Niño phenomenon. Widodo has pledged to dispatch officials for a meeting with Thailand’s Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister, Captain Thamanat Prompow, next year to discuss future trade and cooperation between the two nations.

This strategic initiative not only strengthens economic ties but also positions Thailand as a leader in fostering seamless travel within the ASEAN region. As the countries work towards a shared vision of enhanced cooperation, these efforts are poised to elevate the tourism experience and stimulate economic growth.
