Thailand’s Green Tourism Plan 2030 is a strategic move to position the country as a global leader in sustainable travel. By integrating eco-conscious practices with local tourism, the plan aims to attract environmentally-aware travelers while ensuring cultural preservation and economic growth. The initiative seeks to elevate Thailand’s destinations to the Top 100 Green Destinations worldwide, aligning with global expectations for sustainability and helping the nation meet the growing demand for responsible tourism. This forward-thinking approach not only safeguards the environment but also opens up new opportunities for Thai businesses to thrive in the international market.

Thailand’s Department of Tourism has officially rolled out the Thailand Green Tourism Plan 2030, marking a significant shift toward sustainability as the cornerstone of the nation’s future tourism growth. This ambitious initiative, which carries the theme “Igniting the Path to Global Green Success,” aims to strike a harmonious balance between economic opportunities, environmental conservation, and cultural preservation, positioning Thailand’s destinations to rank among the world’s Top 100 Green Destinations.

The introduction of the Green Tourism Plan 2030 marks Thailand’s dedication to reshaping its tourism industry in response to the rising global demand for eco-friendly and sustainable travel options. The plan sets a course for Thailand to lead by example in a rapidly changing world where eco-conscious travelers seek destinations that align with their values. This new approach is seen as a vital step for the country to stay competitive in a tourism industry that increasingly prioritizes sustainability.

At the heart of this initiative is a four-party memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed on August 6, 2025, between the Department of Tourism, Mahidol University International College (MUIC), the Green Destinations Foundation, and Travelife for Tour Operators. This partnership has led to the creation of STAC Thailand, a dedicated center focused on promoting sustainable tourism across the country. STAC Thailand is set to play a central role in guiding Thai destinations towards sustainability by providing coaching, certification, and connections to international tourism platforms. These efforts will adhere to the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) standards, ensuring that Thailand’s tourism practices are in line with internationally recognized sustainability measures.

In addition, the Department of Tourism unveiled the “Thailand Good Travel” standard, a cornerstone of the Green Tourism Plan 2030, designed to drive sustainable practices across the sector. This sustainability standard and insignia have been specifically designed for small-scale operators, including local communities, travel destinations, small accommodations with up to 50 rooms, and tour operators. Based on GSTC principles but adapted to suit local realities, Thailand Good Travel offers a step-by-step guide for businesses to achieve international recognition for their sustainability efforts.

Operators who are certified under the Thailand Good Travel standard will have the opportunity to integrate seamlessly into the Thailand Green Tourism Plan 2030, gaining access to a localised digital platform that connects with Travelife’s extensive global database of over 16,000 operators. This connection offers these businesses access to new distribution channels and partnership opportunities, expanding their reach in the international tourism market. The initiative’s design ensures that sustainable practices are not just an aspirational goal but a tangible, achievable reality for all stakeholders involved.

The Thailand Green Tourism Plan 2030 takes cues from renowned global sustainability models like Swisstainable in Switzerland, Singapore’s Green Plan, and Slovenia Green. However, it adapts these proven strategies to better suit the unique requirements of Thailand’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This customized approach ensures that local businesses can effectively integrate sustainable practices while fostering growth and contributing to the broader environmental goals of the nation. These international best practices serve as benchmarks, ensuring that Thailand’s sustainability goals are both ambitious and realistic. Furthermore, the plan includes the launch of Thailand Green Coaches, a new program designed to train and certify mentors who will guide businesses in the self-assessment and certification processes. Already, 700 individuals have applied to join this initiative, highlighting the strong interest in sustainability and the importance of local expertise in driving the plan forward.

With substantial financial backing from Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Thailand Green Tourism Plan 2030 is set to be a key element of the country’s broader tourism vision. The plan aligns with Thailand’s pivot from a focus on high volumes of tourists to a strategy that prioritizes high-value, high-yield tourism. This shift is not only expected to drive growth in the tourism sector but also ensure that the industry contributes positively to the nation’s environmental and cultural preservation efforts.

In addition to its sustainability goals, the Thailand Green Tourism Plan 2030 aims to create a more resilient tourism industry that can withstand global challenges such as climate change, over-tourism, and shifting consumer preferences. By positioning itself as a leader in sustainable tourism, Thailand seeks to attract discerning travelers who are looking for meaningful experiences that support local communities and protect the environment.

The Thailand Green Tourism Plan 2030 represents a bold and necessary step for the country as it embraces sustainability as a central driver of its tourism sector’s future. The plan is set to transform Thailand into a global leader in sustainable tourism, ensuring that its breathtaking destinations remain attractive to travelers for generations to come, while safeguarding its cultural and environmental heritage.
