GigNet, a Digital Transformation company that provides enterprise clients and residential communities with high-speed broadband and advanced value-added services based on its extensive fiber-optic network from Cancun to Tulum, announced today the signing of a Collaboration Agreement with the State of Quintana Roo Ministry of Tourism to improve the tourism experience in the Cancun region.

The signing took place during the 47th edition of Tianguis Turistico México, the most relevant Tourism event in Mexico. As a Witness of Honor, Quintana Roo Governor Mara Elena Lezama Espinosa attended the event and signed the agreement.

Quintana Roo is connected to more than 120 locations worldwide via its three international airports, with Cancun Airport welcoming more than 30 million passengers in 2022.

The Collaboration Agreement, signed by State Secretary of Tourism Bernardo Cueto Riestra on behalf of the Quintana Roo Ministry of Tourism (SEDETUR) and Mark Carney, OBE and President of GigNet Mexico, has the overall goal of promoting tourism-related technological development in the Mexican Caribbean.

The agreement sets a framework for the deployment of sophisticated, secure broadband sites in the State of Quintana Roo in order to improve visitor experiences and boost tourism development in the region via world-class Internet services and information technology.

The signing ceremony was also attended by Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña, President of Benito Juárez (Cancun Municipality) where the first GigNet-sponsored special public Wi-Fi Internet access areas will be located, as well as various leaders from the Mexico national tourism sector.

The first phase of this Agreement would build public Wi-Fi zones throughout Mexican Caribbean tourist areas, beginning with Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

GigNet’s commitment to technology growth is projected to extend, in later phases, not only to all Mexican Caribbean towns in tourist regions, but also to economic and administrative hubs in numerous cities, supporting a full digital revolution in the region.

Under this Collaboration Agreement, GigNet will give tourists and locals access to Wi-Fi in order to identify and purchase at local businesses, as well as for improved public safety and security.

This Collaboration Agreement also acknowledges that technology will be a significant driver for the next generation of Mexican Caribbean visitors.

According to the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ), 64% of tourists visiting the Mexican Caribbean are under the age of 39, with over 50% being Millennials. Some travellers travel with 5 to 10 technological gadgets that allow them to connect to the Internet while on the road. They look for routes, promotions, and activities to do before and during their vacation on their phones, tablets, and personal computers.

Carney stated, “With one of the best climates and natural environments in the world, incredible and innovative restaurants and shopping malls, a youth destination culture, and thousands of new smart home units for residents and digital nomads, we truly believe the quality of life of the Mexican Caribbean has all the elements to attract investment, businesses, and now – with access to GigNet high-speed Internet – tech entrepreneurs and established technology companies seeking to relocate to this attractive business environment.”

The “Silicon Maya” objective of GigNet aims to establish Quintana Roo as Mexico’s premier state for digital transformation, technological innovation, and Smart Cities – and a model for the rest of Mexico and Latin America. High-speed internet connectivity has been shown to boost economic growth and possibilities for all segments of society across the world.

The “Silicon Maya” effort by GigNet has the potential to bring enormous societal advantages such as online learning, enhanced healthcare, remote employment options, a diverse economy, and expanded access to public services.
