The WTTC’s 2023 Economic Impact Research unveiled the GDP contribution of Japan’s tourism sector which in 2023 is forecasted to reach USD 285.5 billion.
The aforesaid data is only 6.8% less of the figures of 2019 pre-pandemic statistics of USD 306.5 billion. By end of 2023, tourism could show 6.8% of the total economy.
In spite of the ill-impacts of the pandemic extending in Japan in 2023, WTTC is predicting for the sector to generate roughly 470,000 jobs in 2023 with a target to reach almost 5.6 million.
This signifies almost one in twelve workers in Japan, are associated with the tourism sector, directly or indirectly.
As the sector is still going down of 300,000 jobs to reach the levels of pre- pandemic times, by the end of 2023, it will only be 5.2% under 2019 levels.
In Japan, foreign visitor spending is forecasted to rise by 553.4% in 2023 and reach USD 16.8 billion. It’s still 57.6% below the peak figures on 2019.
The GDP contribution of tourism in 2022 increased by almost 50.5%. This data to reach over USD 257 billion. It represented 6.2% of the economy.
Last year, tourism witnessed a major rise in jobs compared to the year before, to almost 5.1 million jobs countrywide, one in 13 jobs all over Japan.
In 2022, international visitor spending in Japan dropped due to the ill- effects of prolonged travel restrictions.
