Tourist footfall in Nagaland is one of the country’s highest

Tourist footfall in Nagaland was approximately 15% of the state’s total population, which was among the highest in the country.

Tourism and Higher Education minister, Temjen Imna Along disclosed this.

She was interacting with the media on the sidelines of the concluding day programme of the 17th Bishu Mini Hornbill Tribal Festival here on Sunday.

The minister stated this in terms of population and area, inflow of tourists into Nagaland was one the highest in the country.

He said that tourism in the state had improved due to efforts of the government under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio and former chief minister Dr SC Jamir, besides the efforts of the department of Tourism, Art and Culture and all the line departments.

Noting that Hornbill Festival was now known throughout the world, he said the state government look at the tourism industry in a very holistic manner.

Stressing that the government wanted people to come and enjoy the land of the Nagas, Along claimed that state’s infrastructure was being developed.

He said the government envisioned to make 25th Hornbill Festival scheduled later this year a unique experience for all visitors. He mentioned that the government wanted to promote Nagaland as a land of festivals, traditions, culture, and inclusiveness.

Asked about the government’s initiative to tackle traffic jams during Hornbill Festival and the proposed expansion of the festival site, Along replied that the chief minister and Tourism department where having discussions to ease traffic congestion during the Hornbill Festival.

He also sought public cooperation in easing traffic congestion like resorting to car pooling.

“If each individual wants to bring one vehicle, it will be causing trouble. Rather, five persons can pool a car and travel together. This will ease traffic congestion,” he explained.

On whether the Hornbill Festival would be made a 24/7 event, the minister disclosed that the matter was being discussed. He said the government was mulling to open the heritage area round the clock.

“With a lot of responsibility and strategic maneuverer because we have to be responsible to open up the Kisama area, and at the same time make sure that the entrepreneurs are working diligently and rightly by giving tourists the experience that is needed,” he said.
