As previously mentioned, there are ongoing efforts to renew and improve Tourist Guide qualifications. All existing guide qualifications listed on SAQA and CATHSSETA have been discontinued and expired as of June 30, 2023. Students have until June 30, 2024, to enroll in the current qualifications, which must be completed by June 30, 2027.

While the enhancement and professionalization of qualifications are commendable, various private sector industry associations including SATSA, SA AIA, FGASA, NFTGA, and SATOVITO are collaborating to represent Tourist Guides and their specialties. This collaboration aims to ensure that the development process is realistic and avoids unintended consequences.

Here’s an update on the ongoing developments and challenges:

New Qualification Development: The Department of Tourism, in conjunction with CATHSSETA and industry representatives, held four mapping sessions in 2023 to discuss and outline potential new Nature, Culture, and Adventure Guide Qualifications. Although informal, these discussions provided valuable insights, and the final report has been circulated for feedback. The next steps involve CATHSSETA hosting a formal mapping session with industry stakeholders and initiating curriculum development with the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

Private Sector Involvement: Private sector industry associations are dedicated to ensuring that the voices of all Tourist Guides, representing diverse specializations, are considered during this process. SA AIA is specifically developing a framework for Adventure Guiding to establish industry standards for guiding, encompassing practical skills and safety requirements.

Request for Extension: Association partners are actively advocating for an extension of the current qualification deadlines. This extension aims to provide guides with sufficient time and resources to adapt to and complete the required qualifications.

Acknowledgment of Past Credentials: The Association’s partners have submitted a formal request for the acknowledgment of all existing qualifications, such as the Generic Adventure Site Guide skills program, as historical credentials. Such acknowledgment would allow guides to employ these qualifications for initial registration or renewal. Nonetheless, a resolution on this issue is yet to be reached.
