Toyota Motor Corporation and Joby Aviation, a leader in developing electric air taxis for commercial use, announced the successful completion of Joby’s first international demonstration flight. This milestone event took place earlier this week at Toyota’s Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Shizuoka, Japan, with the iconic Mount Fuji serving as a backdrop.

The demonstration showcased the minimal noise profile of Joby’s zero-emissions aircraft and celebrated almost seven years of partnership between the two companies. Throughout this collaboration, Toyota has shared its vast expertise in automotive manufacturing and technology. Toyota engineers now collaborate directly with the Joby team in California. In 2023, Toyota and Joby solidified their commitment by entering into a long-term agreement, under which Toyota will supply essential powertrain and actuation components for Joby’s aircraft production.

“Our first overseas flight marks a significant milestone on our journey towards making clean air travel an everyday reality,” said JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby. “We share Toyota’s vision for the future of mobility and are honored to have had the opportunity to present a glimpse of that future through our flight in Japan.”

A diverse group of stakeholders convened at the test facility to celebrate the exhibition flight and this historic milestone. The event featured notable attendees, including Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, along with representatives from Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau.

At the event, Hiroki Nakajima, executive vice president and chief technology officer of Toyota Motor Corporation, said: “Air mobility has the potential to change our ‘sense of distance and time,’ and open a future with the new option of air mobility that will further enrich the lives of many people.”

“Toyota is committed to deepening our collaboration with Joby and we will continue to work together to realize our shared dreams,” he continued.

Joby’s electric air taxi is built to accommodate a pilot and four passengers, reaching speeds of up to 200 mph while providing high-speed travel with zero operating emissions and significantly less noise compared to helicopters. This innovative service aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce environmental impact, and offer transportation solutions for both urban and rural areas, showcasing its potential to tackle various mobility challenges in Japan and globally. Since its founding in 2009, Joby has conducted thousands of test flights, including demonstrations from the iconic Downtown Manhattan Heliport in New York City.

This announcement follows Toyota’s recent pledge to invest an additional $500 million in Joby to support the certification and commercial production of its electric air taxi. With this investment, Toyota’s total contribution to Joby will reach $894 million and will include plans for a manufacturing alliance to facilitate the first phase of commercialization. The investment will be divided into two equal parts and is subject to standard regulatory approvals, finalization of collaborative and commercial agreements, and additional conditions related to a strategic manufacturing alliance for the second tranche.
