Travel and tourism industry was impacted the most in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, coming to a complete halt, said Rajni Hasija, the chairman and managing director of IRCTC, at HT Tourism Conclave.

In the course of the first wave of Covid-19 in 2020, IRCTC restarted operations with only 15 passenger trains where only need-based traveling was allowed, said Hasija. She further said that there were substantial cancelations concerning inbound tourism.

However, the situation is not similar for India’s aviation industry, which is yet to recuperate from monetary damages that it had experienced during the pandemic, said Parampreet Singh Bakshi, the vice-president of South Asia, Center for Asia-Pacific Aviation (CAPA), which is an advisory firm.

Last year, the Indian aviation sector witnessed 106 million passengers with 8:2 ratio of domestic and international, respectively, said Mr. Bakshi. He said that this year, however, promises better times and they are supposing 130-140 million domestic and 55- 60 million international travelers to avail flights.

Mr. Bakshi said that regarding air traffic, CAPA forecasts that the airlines will get to witness global traffic go back to pre-Covid-19 standards by next year. In the case of airports, they are predictable to generate half a billion dollar income this year, dependent on revenue share.

Mr. Bakshi said that air travel is still thought to be the safest mode of transport.
