Travel South Dakota is esctatic about the success of the state’s recent Native American Tourism program, which is one of several recent attempts to encourage tribal tourism around the state.
The Native American Tourism campaign was developed in collaboration with the South Dakota Native Tourism Alliance (SDNTA) to highlight the vital cultural experiences and tales present within Indigenous communities around South Dakota.
The campaign, which ran from June 1 to July 31, 2023, used video, display, native advertising, and sponsored social to showcase South Dakota’s Native American offerings, history, and culture. The campaign’s success resulted in 5.6 million impressions. Furthermore, the campaign resulted in almost 14,763 hotel and 360 travel reservations.
This campaign is backed by the Tribal Nations: Oceti Sakowin Passport, a smartphone initiative that employs gamification to encourage people to visit key Indigenous sites around the state.
Travel South Dakota and the South Dakota Department of Tourism have also collaborated to develop an updated tribal nations tourist guide.
The Guide to Tribal Nations: Oceti Sakowin Homelands includes a map, a brief history of each tribe, and tips for guest etiquette, as well as sites that allow chances to learn more about each tribe. The material of the handbook was created and approved by SDNTA members.
