Trenitalia has officially launched its new fleet of ETR1000 Frecciarossa high-speed trains, with the first unit entering revenue service on September 28, 2025. The much-anticipated launch follows a preview run from Rome to Naples on September 26, attended by FS CEO Stefano Antonio Donnarumma and Trenitalia CEO Gianpiero Strisciuglio. This new fleet marks a significant upgrade to Italy’s high-speed rail network and is set to further improve the country’s rail transport infrastructure.

A Major Investment in High-Speed Rail

The ETR1000 trains are part of an ambitious €1.3 billion investment in the future of Italian rail. Trenitalia has ordered a total of 36 units from Hitachi Rail, with the majority of the fleet expected by 2029. The first batch of 30 trains was confirmed in November 2023, and the operator has the option to order up to 10 additional units. The trains will be delivered at a rate of 10 per year, bolstering the high-speed network with state-of-the-art technology and design.

Technological Innovation and Design

The new ETR1000 fleet, which has a design speed of 360 km/h but will operate at up to 300 km/h in commercial service, is the first to be exclusively built by Hitachi. The design and production have taken place at Hitachi’s facilities in Naples and Pistoia, Italy. While primarily designed for use within Italy, the trains are equipped with multi-system traction and signalling capabilities, making them suitable for cross-border operations in countries such as France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

The high-speed trains are not only faster but are also equipped with cutting-edge technological features. These include a new traction system, a 100Mbps ethernet command and control network, and an energy measurement system (EMS) that can accurately track and report energy consumption for billing purposes. Additionally, passengers will benefit from a tenfold increase in Wi-Fi connection capacity, with a 5G-enabled system that supports four different telecom networks.

Sustainability at the Core

The ETR1000 trains are designed with sustainability in mind, boasting a recyclability rate of 97.1%, a notable increase of 2.7 percentage points compared to the previous generation. Additionally, the material recovery rate stands at 98.2%, reflecting Trenitalia’s commitment to reducing environmental impact. The train’s air-conditioning systems have been optimized to minimize environmental effects, achieving a 56% reduction in global warming potential (GWP).

Notably, the ETR1000 is the world’s first high-speed train to obtain environmental impact certification (EPD) based on a lifecycle assessment (LCA). This certification underscores Trenitalia’s commitment to ensuring that its fleet contributes positively to the environment, meeting modern sustainability standards.

Enhanced Passenger Experience

The new ETR1000 trains have been designed to enhance passenger comfort and usability. The interiors, restyled by renowned design firm Giugiaro Design, feature a spacious Executive class with redesigned seats, as well as a new galley area. In standard class, the number of seats remains the same at 300, but the trains now include eight additional luggage racks, larger overhead lockers, and more generous luggage space, catering to the needs of modern travelers.

Trenitalia’s CEO, Gianpiero Strisciuglio, highlighted the improvements, stating, “We’ve worked to improve every detail: more welcoming interiors, more luggage space, and advanced onboard technological services. The goal is to meet the needs of changing mobility in Italy and soon in Europe.”

Future Prospects for High-Speed Rail in Europe

With a growing focus on sustainability and efficiency, Trenitalia’s new fleet is expected to revolutionize the Italian high-speed network and set a benchmark for other European rail operators. Earlier in 2025, Trenitalia entered into a cooperation agreement with Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) to introduce high-speed services linking Rome and Milan with Munich, Germany, set to commence in December 2026. This partnership demonstrates the potential for expanded high-speed rail connections across Europe.
