On Thursday morning, the largest tour operator of the world, TUI Group, communicated to the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands regarding its commitment to the islands, confirming positive expectations for the summers 2022, with tourist arrival with longer stays and more spending on vacations.

In a meeting on Thursday morning, Yaiza Castilla, Regional Tourism Minister, received the news, which was attended by the CFO of TUI Group, Sebastian Ebel; the CEO of Markets and Airlines, David Burling; and the director of Purchasing, Helen Caron, along with the Promotur, José Juan Lorenzo, the managing director of Tourism Board for the Canary Islands.

The finance director of the company said that to the archipelago, they hope the summer season would bring 1.3 million tourists. The number would be same as before the pandemic, even though with major changes as these visitors from here will extend their stay by at least one more day on an average, going from 9.5 overnight stays to 10.5, and are spending 20% more on average on their vacations due to booking higher quality rooms.

To quote Mister Ebel, “The destination has been able to take advantage of these two years of tourist ups and downs to improve its facilities and its offer, and make higher-class establishments available to customers.” For Ebel, the work carried out by Turismo de Canarias has brought a destination to the forefront that has all ingredients to get successful even than the times existed before pandemic, regardless of the war unleashed in Ukraine.

“Although the war is turning out to be a nightmare, fortunately it is not having the expected impact on tourism as a whole, with the exception of countries like Poland or Finland, which are closer to the conflict,” he said.
