Germany is preparing to introduce a new overnight rail service between Hamburg and Munich on 23 March 2027, with Berlin-based Nox Mobility launching trains via Bremen and Augsburg to expand travel options across the country. The service will initially operate three times a week in each direction, with one-way fares starting at €65. The development aims to offer travellers a convenient alternative to daytime journeys and short-haul flights, while creating fresh opportunities for German tourism, business travel and multi-city holidays. Tickets are already available through the operator’s booking platform.

The new connection forms part of Nox Mobility’s broader plan to develop a modern European night train network. Its first service will focus on providing passengers with individual spaces designed for resting, working and travelling overnight. The announcement also comes as Germany prepares significant improvements to its wider long-distance railway timetable for 2027. Together, these developments could provide travellers with more flexibility when planning journeys between major cities.

Germany Prepares for a New Era of Night Train Travel Between Hamburg and Munich

The introduction of the Hamburg–Munich service will give passengers another way to travel between northern and southern Germany. Rather than spending several hours on a daytime train, travellers will have the option of leaving in the evening and arriving the following morning.

Hamburg is one of Germany’s leading maritime and cultural destinations. Its historic harbour, waterfront districts, museums and entertainment venues attract visitors throughout the year. Munich, meanwhile, serves as Bavaria’s capital and an important centre for cultural tourism, international events and regional travel.

The proposed connection will bring these two destinations together through a service designed around overnight travel. For passengers planning weekend breaks, business meetings or longer holidays, morning arrivals could make it easier to organise activities without using the middle of the day for transport. The service will also stop in Bremen and Augsburg, broadening its potential tourism reach.

New Hamburg–Munich Night Train Timetable Brings Four German Cities Together

Nox Mobility has scheduled its initial services to operate three times weekly in each direction. The route will connect Hamburg, Bremen, Augsburg and Munich, linking northern Germany with Bavaria. The planned timetable provides evening departures and morning arrivals, allowing passengers to spend the night travelling.

All times are local to Germany and represent the announced timetable, subject to change before operations begin.

The southbound journey is scheduled to take approximately ten hours and 52 minutes. The northbound journey will take approximately eleven hours and seven minutes. Although these journeys are longer than daytime high-speed rail services, their main advantage lies in allowing passengers to travel during hours normally reserved for rest. Morning arrivals may also support onward connections to other German destinations, making the service relevant to travellers planning multi-stop journeys.

Nox Mobility Introduces Individual Suites to Improve Overnight Passenger Comfort

One of the most distinctive features of the new service is its Nox Suites accommodation concept. The operator plans to provide each passenger with an individual space rather than relying entirely on conventional shared seating arrangements. The suites are designed to serve several purposes during a journey. Passengers can sit comfortably, use a table for work or personal activities, and store their luggage within the designated space.

The main onboard features include:

  • Individual accommodation spaces for greater privacy.
  • Large reclining seats designed for overnight rest.
  • Approximately two metres of space alongside the window.
  • Tables suitable for work, reading or dining.
  • Luggage storage facilities.
  • Power sockets for personal electronic devices.

The seats will recline into a lounge-style resting position during the night. This arrangement is particularly relevant to passengers who want more personal space while travelling between cities. However, the initial Nox Suites are not conventional private bedrooms with full beds. The operator’s plans for dedicated single and double sleeping rooms belong to a later development phase, currently targeted for 2029. This distinction is important when comparing the service with established European sleeper trains.

Tickets Starting at €65 Could Make Overnight Rail More Attractive to Travellers

Nox Mobility has announced starting one-way fares of €65 for the Hamburg–Munich connection. The introductory price provides an indication of the operator’s intention to compete for travellers who might otherwise choose conventional trains, flights or road transport. The starting fare does not mean that every departure or accommodation option will cost €65. Actual ticket prices can vary according to travel dates, demand and available inventory. The overnight format introduces another factor into travellers’ calculations. Passengers may be able to combine transport with a period of rest, potentially reducing the need to book accommodation for one night.

However, this will depend on individual itineraries and whether passengers are comfortable using reclining seats instead of traditional sleeping berths. For budget-conscious travellers, students, independent tourists and people organising short breaks, the service could become another option when comparing the total cost of a journey. The operator has opened ticket sales ahead of the scheduled March 2027 launch.

Hamburg and Munich Tourism Could Benefit From More Flexible City-Break Connections

The proposed service could support tourism activity in two of Germany’s established urban destinations by allowing visitors to arrive early and begin their programmes in the morning. In Hamburg, travellers can explore the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district, the harbour waterfront, cultural institutions and popular entertainment areas. The city also serves as a starting point for journeys across northern Germany, creating opportunities for visitors interested in combining urban attractions with regional experiences.

Munich offers a different tourism experience, with historic squares, museums, Bavarian architecture, cultural venues and access to surrounding destinations. Visitors arriving in Munich can explore the city itself or plan onward journeys towards other parts of Bavaria. For destination management organisations, the additional railway connection could provide another product to promote within domestic tourism campaigns. It could also help travel planners create packages connecting both cities within a single German itinerary, subject to the service’s limited initial operating days.
