UnionPay International and Cape Town Tourism have jointly announced their collaboration at Cape Point, the renowned destination in Cape Town.

Their mutual objective is to enhance payment convenience for UnionPay cardholders in Cape Town. The signing ceremony was attended by Fujun Shao, Chairman of China UnionPay, Larry Wang, Vice President of UnionPay International, and their delegation.

Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, expressed his excitement, stating, “We are delighted to have seen a surge in visitors to Cape Town this year. From January to October, we welcomed over 1 million international arrivals at Cape Town International Airport, marking a 108% recovery compared to 2019. In a recent survey conducted with CTT members, 90% indicated that they anticipate better or significantly improved business performance during the 2023/2024 High Season compared to last year.”

Capitalizing on its abundant natural tourism resources and seizing the opportunity presented by the reopening of tourism, Cape Town Tourism aims to establish the city as one of the world’s top tourist destinations. To achieve this goal, Cape Town views China as a crucial and lucrative source market for tourism. Given that UnionPay cards are a preferred payment method among Chinese outbound tourists, and UnionPay International shares the same objective as Cape Town Tourism, a collaboration between the two parties is a natural step.

Duminy added, “The Cape Town Tourism – UnionPay Partnership offers a perfect opportunity to strengthen tourism cooperation while simultaneously enhancing payment accessibility for UnionPay clients, thereby creating a welcoming and seamless visitor experience in Cape Town. We recognize the value of this collaborative effort and our shared objectives.”

Asad Burney, Head of UnionPay Africa Region, commented, “UnionPay’s acceptance network and service offerings in South Africa have continually improved over the years through partnerships with local institutions. We believe that this partnership with Cape Town Tourism will enable us to better serve our customers when they travel to Cape Town, providing affordable, accessible, and innovative payment services to UnionPay global cardholders.”

UnionPay International, a subsidiary of China UnionPay, is the world’s largest card payments brand in terms of transaction volume, with card acceptance in 181 countries and regions and issuance in 79 countries and regions. With acceptance by more than 85% of businesses in South Africa, UnionPay has firmly established itself as an international card scheme in South Africa and the broader region since 2008.

In Africa, UnionPay operates in 50 countries and issues cards locally in 15 countries. It has introduced various innovative payment products in Africa in response to global digital transformation and financial inclusion trends.
