United States facing a mix of storms and heatwave

A persistent heat dome over the south-central United States is set to bring soaring temperatures, making it one of the hottest summers on record.

The heat will continue to scorch Texas, with cities like Houston experiencing multiple days with temperatures at or above 100 degrees. Dallas, San Antonio, and other parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and western Louisiana may also see triple-digit temperatures. Temperatures will be 5-10 degrees above historical averages in the low to mid-90s.

While the south-central region battles extreme heat, the central Plains and Upper Midwest will face rounds of storms. Thunderstorms are expected to develop and travel across the central Plains, with the risk of severe weather and flash flooding. Damaging wind gusts, large hail, and the potential for flash flooding are among the threats. Some areas are still suffering from extreme and exceptional drought, and the storms could provide much-needed relief. However, excessive rainfall may also lead to flash flooding in certain regions.

Areas from eastern Wyoming to northeastern Colorado, Nebraska, northeastern Kansas, southwestern Iowa, and Missouri will be at risk of severe thunderstorms. Farther north, from northeastern Montana to southern Manitoba, North Dakota, South Dakota, and parts of Minnesota, a similar threat will exist. As the week progresses, the batch of thunderstorms near the US-Canada border will continue to push southeastward, potentially affecting northwestern Ontario, northern Michigan, northern Wisconsin, and central Minnesota.

The rain may provide relief for drought-affected areas, helping crops during their maturation period. However, there’s a risk of excessive rainfall leading to flash flooding in some regions, even where severe weather is not expected.

While the south-central US struggles with extreme heat, the central Plains and Upper Midwest will contend with stormy conditions. As the summer progresses, these weather patterns are set to impact various regions, requiring residents to stay alert to potential severe weather and flash flooding.
