A significant improvement to Thai tourism has been achieved through the introduction of Vietnam Airlines’ new Ho Chi Minh City–Phuket non-stop flights that constitute the first route developed following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Vietnam Airlines.
The new flight offers connections from Southern Vietnam to one of the major resort destinations in Thailand and will support leisure travel, trade packages, family holidays, and other types of ASEAN tourism ties as both nations celebrate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relationship. As per TAT’s official MOU statement, Ho Chi Minh City–Phuket has emerged as the prioritized route, which is scheduled to begin operations on 2 July 2026 on a weekly basis.
The launch gives practical form to the TAT–Vietnam Airlines tourism partnership, which was signed on 28 May 2026 in Bangkok. The official TAT announcement said the cooperation framework focuses on route development, extra frequencies, joint marketing, travel trade engagement, familiarisation trips, media activity and market information exchange. It also identified priority routes linking Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai.
This matters because tourism agreements only create real value when they result in bookable capacity. The Ho Chi Minh City–Phuket flight now gives Vietnamese travellers a direct path to the Andaman coast without needing to connect through Bangkok. That improves convenience, reduces travel time and gives tour operators stronger room to package Phuket beach holidays, family travel, events, shopping, wellness and island experiences.

The new service officially opened on 2 July 2026, with VN621 operating from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Phuket International Airport. TAT’s official flight-launch page confirms that the inaugural service arrived in Phuket with 152 passengers, marking the start of the route under the partnership.
Vietnam Airlines’ official Thailand flight page lists the route as a nonstop service from Ho Chi Minh City to Phuket, with four weekly flights on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. The same official listing shows VN621 departing Ho Chi Minh City at 16:00 and arriving in Phuket at 17:50, while the return VN620 leaves Phuket at 18:45 and arrives in Ho Chi Minh City at 20:45.
The flight timing gives the route strong commercial value. A late-afternoon departure from Ho Chi Minh City and early-evening arrival in Phuket allow travellers to begin a holiday on the same day. The Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday pattern supports weekend breaks, short leisure escapes, family trips, flexible holidays and extended stays.
This is especially useful for Vietnamese travellers who want beach access without a complex itinerary. Phuket can now be sold as a direct island escape from southern Viet Nam. For travel agents, the route opens space for three-night, four-night and week-long packages. For Phuket hotels, restaurants and attractions, it creates another short-haul source of demand from a nearby ASEAN market.

Phuket is one of Thailand’s most powerful destination brands. The official Tourism Authority of Thailand destination page identifies Phuket as Thailand’s largest island, located in the south of the country on the Andaman Sea. TAT also promotes the wider southern region for its beaches and islands, with Phuket, Ko Samui, Ko Phi Phi, Ko Lipe and Ko Tao among well-known destinations.
The new Ho Chi Minh City link therefore connects Vietnamese travellers directly to a destination already known for beaches, nightlife, food, shopping, resorts, family attractions and island-hopping. It also gives Phuket’s tourism sector an opportunity to diversify demand across more regional markets, rather than relying too heavily on a limited set of long-haul or traditional short-haul source countries.
TAT is supporting the new route through its Ho Chi Minh City Office, which is promoting the “Thai Lan – Càng Hiểu Càng Yêu” initiative. The campaign presents Thailand as a safe, meaningful and value-led destination, with messaging shaped around Vietnamese travellers’ interest in lifestyle travel, family holidays, events and flexible experiences. TAT’s official launch information also links the campaign to Thailand’s target of 689,000 Vietnamese arrivals in 2026.
This is a smart positioning strategy. Vietnamese outbound travellers increasingly respond to destinations that offer convenience, affordability, recognisable culture, shopping, entertainment and easy group travel. Thailand already has strong regional appeal. Direct flights to Phuket make that appeal more tangible for travellers in southern Viet Nam.
To help convert the new route into stronger booking momentum, TAT’s Ho Chi Minh City Office is organising a familiarisation trip from 7 to 11 July 2026, bringing 16 Vietnamese travel agents and four media representatives to Phuket. The official TAT-linked launch information says the programme will showcase tourism products and include business matching with Phuket tourism operators.
This trade push is important. New flights need more than seats. They need packages, hotel partnerships, destination knowledge, promotional content and confidence among sellers. By bringing Vietnamese agents and media to Phuket, TAT is helping the market understand what can be sold, how itineraries can be built and where local operators can create stronger business links.
The launch also carries diplomatic significance. TAT’s MOU announcement states that the agreement was signed as Thailand and Viet Nam mark 50 years of diplomatic relations, during a period of high-level engagement between the two countries. The new route turns that diplomatic milestone into direct visitor movement. Tourism is one of the easiest ways for regional relationships to become visible to ordinary travellers. More flights mean more holidays, more family trips, more student travel, more events, more trade delegations and more cultural familiarity. The Ho Chi Minh City–Phuket service therefore supports not only leisure demand, but also broader people-to-people exchange across ASEAN.
For Vietnam Airlines, the new route expands its Thailand network and strengthens its regional leisure proposition. The official Vietnam Airlines listing promotes the service as a new nonstop connection between Ho Chi Minh City and Phuket, with fares, bonus miles and booking channels available through the airline’s website, app, ticket offices and authorised agents.
The route also supports Vietnam Airlines’ position as a carrier connecting Vietnamese travellers with major Southeast Asian leisure destinations. Phuket’s popularity gives the airline a clear demand base, while TAT’s trade and consumer promotion can help build awareness faster than a route launched without destination-marketing support.
The new service can support multiple tourism segments in Phuket. Hotels may gain from weekend and family stays. Tour operators can package beaches, boat trips, cultural attractions and food experiences. Restaurants and retail outlets can benefit from added regional spending. Event organisers may use the connection for small groups, weddings, corporate incentives and lifestyle gatherings.
TAT’s official Phuket content highlights attractions such as Laem Phromthep, Old Phuket Town, Ko Racha, Ko Mai Thon, Sirinat National Park, Hat Surin and other coastal experiences, showing the breadth of products that can be used in Vietnamese-market itineraries.
The launch reinforces a larger regional truth: ASEAN tourism growth depends heavily on direct air connectivity. Travellers choose destinations that are easy to reach, easy to package and easy to understand. By linking Ho Chi Minh City directly with Phuket, TAT and Vietnam Airlines have removed one of the main barriers between a major Vietnamese outbound market and a major Thai resort destination.
The route also supports Thailand’s strategy of matching market demand with routes, products and promotions. TAT’s MOU framework already identified air access, joint marketing, trade partnerships and familiarisation activity as core areas of cooperation. The Phuket launch shows how that framework can move quickly from agreement to implementation.
This particular route provides an opportune opportunity for Thailand and Vietnam. The new route improves the accessibility of Phuket to a neighboring market that is growing in size. The flight provides the Vietnamese traveler with an easier way of getting to one of Thailand’s most popular islands. The route is also an asset to the TAT’s 2026 target number of visitors from Vietnam. This route is also commercially viable for all those involved in the aviation industry.
With time and consistent promotion, the success of this particular route would be based on competitive pricing, a good package design and the quality of the experience. If all this comes together then this route will not just be a symbolic product of the TAT-Vietnam Airlines MOU but will also act as a good model for future ASEAN tourism cooperation efforts.
