Around 70 Australian media professionals, including editors and journalists, are also taking part in the initiative to gain greater insight into California’s diverse destinations, attractions and visitor offerings.
The mission is aimed at showcasing the breadth of California travel experiences, from outdoor adventures and sporting events to culinary attractions and iconic destinations.
Australia continues to represent a significant international market for California tourism, with Australian visitors recognised among the state’s highest-spending international travellers.
Australian travellers generated US$1.28 billion in visitor spending in California in 2025. Following a softer year, spending is forecast to increase to US$1.35 billion in 2026 and reach US$1.43 billion in 2027.
Australia is expected to contribute around five per cent of California’s total international visitor spending in 2026, highlighting the continued economic importance of Australian visitors.
Visit California president and CEO Caroline Beteta said Australia remained one of California’s most valuable and loyal international markets. She noted that both regions shared strong connections through interests such as authentic experiences, nature, sport and lifestyle-based travel.
She added that the size and scale of the delegation demonstrated California’s commitment to welcoming Australian visitors and strengthening engagement with the country’s travel sector.
The Visit California tourism mission has been launched alongside a major sporting moment in Australia, with the first NFL game in the country providing a significant platform for destination promotion.
The game features two California-based teams, the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams, competing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of a sold-out audience of 100,000 spectators.
Visit California is using the event to introduce its Australian NFL partnership and connect California’s tourism message with the growing popularity of sports travel.
As part of the campaign, the tourism body is hosting its Ultimate Playground consumer activation at the NFL Kickoff Fan Festival at Melbourne Park from 10 to 12 September. Visitors participating in the activation have the opportunity to win a California road trip experience.
Australian radio personalities Jase, Lauren and Clint are also supporting the campaign by broadcasting from the NFL’s Radio Row at the MCG through a partnership with Visit California.
The presenters recently completed a California road trip covering Los Angeles, Palm Springs and San Francisco, highlighting the state’s sporting and leisure attractions.
Food and regional culture are also playing a key role in promoting California travel experiences during the Australian mission.
Visit California has partnered with Australian-born, Los Angeles-based chef Curtis Stone for a special media dinner at Glasshaus Brücke in Melbourne on 9 September.
The event features a menu designed to showcase California’s agricultural products, regional flavours and diverse food culture, offering media representatives a taste of the state’s culinary identity.
The delegation includes representatives from some of California’s leading tourism organisations, attractions and hospitality brands. Participants include Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, San Francisco Travel Association, San Diego Tourism Authority, Visit Anaheim, Disneyland Resort, Universal Studios Hollywood, Visit West Hollywood, Visit Greater Palm Springs, Santa Monica Travel & Tourism and Lake Tahoe Travel.
Through trade meetings, media engagement, sporting partnerships and culinary showcases, California tourism is continuing to strengthen its connection with the Australia travel market and encourage future visits from Australian travellers.
The Visit California tourism mission has reinforced Australia’s position as a priority market for California tourism through extensive trade engagement, media activity and destination promotion. The eight-year milestone delegation has highlighted the value of Australian travellers to California while showcasing the state’s diverse California travel experiences.
By combining industry meetings, NFL partnerships and culinary events, the initiative has created new opportunities to promote California as a leading international destination. As the Australia travel market continues to contribute strongly to visitor spending, California is strengthening its long-term relationship with Australian travellers and tourism partners.
