 Cuba, Varadero,

Varadero, Cuba, to host a key tourism event on April 29-30, focusing on innovation and sustainability, says UN Tourism’s Gustavo Santos.

On March 15, it was announced by Gustavo Santos, the UN Tourism’s Regional Director for the Americas, that the prestigious Varadero resort in Matanzas, Cuba, is set to host a significant gathering in the tourism industry. This information was shared in an interview with Travel Trade Caribbean (TTC), a European news outlet.

Santos disclosed that Varadero will be the venue for the 69th session of the Regional Commission for the Americas (CAM) alongside a seminar titled “Enhancing Tourism Growth through Innovation” scheduled for April 29 and 30. The event will bring together representatives from 26 countries within the region, including two Associate Members and various stakeholders from the private sector.

The upcoming gathering will focus on key priorities such as enhancing connectivity, promoting sustainability, empowering women and the youth, and fostering product development in areas like culinary and rural tourism, according to Santos.

An additional highlight of the event will be the presentation of the second Amadeus report, detailing travel trends within the Americas for 2024.

The seminar aims to showcase exemplary practices in innovation and investment within local communities, human capital, biodiversity, and infrastructure, seeking sustainable solutions to boost community-based tourism and entrepreneurial efforts in creating unique tourist experiences.

Santos emphasized Cuba’s year-round appealing beaches, its historically rich colonial cities, and the cultural heritage of Havana’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside the welcoming nature of the Cuban people.

He also noted the potential for significant growth in the tourism sector within the Americas, stressing the need for enhanced connectivity. Collaborating with the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the goal is to foster better air transport links to facilitate multi-destination tourism and regional travel.

Additionally, the World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) Regional Office for the Americas, located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will prioritize promoting investment, focusing on green initiatives and strategies centered on education and training for the youth.

Santos highlighted achievements such as the establishment of the first Tourism Law Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean by the UNWTO. With the backing of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), Tourism Investment Guides have been developed, highlighting investment opportunities and incentives in various countries, with ongoing projects in nations including Cuba, Peru, Honduras, and El Salvador.
