The Heartland of Legends Route is helping Cyprus and the Troodos Mountains develop inland tourism by linking villages in the mountains with producers, culture, and nature along the interior of the island. The program falls under the Deputy Ministry of Tourism’s efforts to boost tourism in rural and mountainous destinations, apart from the coastal destinations that Cyprus currently offers. The Tourism Strategy 2035 of the Cypriot government lists the Heartland of Legends as an important project in mountainous Cyprus.

Heartland of Legends Connects Rural Cyprus

Heartland of Legends is structured as a network of experiential tourism opportunities rather than a conventional single road route. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism describes it as a collection of experiences provided by local communities across rural, mountain and remote areas.

The route includes activities connected with local traditions, food production, culture, nature, hiking, climbing and birdwatching. Hundreds of businesses offering experiential tourism and agrotourism accommodation have already been included in the programme, according to the national tourism strategy.

For visitors, this creates opportunities to build itineraries around several villages instead of concentrating travel in one destination.

Troodos Villages Become Tourism Gateways

Fikardou, Kalopanayiotis and Moutoullas are among the mountain communities associated with Cyprus’s rural tourism offer. Their traditional architecture, narrow streets and surrounding landscapes provide a slower-paced alternative to the island’s coastal tourism centres.

Kalopanayiotis is known for its mountain setting, traditional buildings and cultural attractions, while Moutoullas combines village heritage with access to forested mountain landscapes.

Fikardou provides another example of preserved rural architecture and village tourism. Visitors can explore historic buildings, walk through the settlement and connect the experience with wider Troodos routes.

Traditional Food Adds a Local Dimension

Food and agricultural experiences form an important part of the Heartland of Legends programme. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism’s 2026 grant scheme supports experiential workshops involving traditional crafts, agricultural and livestock product processing and wine gastronomy in communities located along the route.

These activities allow visitors to experience food production and traditional skills within the communities where they are practised.

Cyprus’s rural food experiences include traditional dairy products, honey, local fruits, breads and regional wines. Commandaria and Cyprus wine routes provide additional opportunities to connect agriculture with tourism.

Commandaria Extends the Mountain Journey

Commandaria provides a distinctive connection between wine tourism and the island’s mountain communities. The wine is produced from indigenous grape varieties grown in the Commandaria region and forms part of Cyprus’s established wine heritage.

The official Visit Cyprus tourism platform promotes Commandaria and wine routes as experiences connecting visitors with vineyards, indigenous grape varieties and Cyprus’s wine history.

Travellers can combine wine experiences with village visits, local food and mountain excursions.

UNESCO Churches Add Cultural Routes

The Troodos region contains a group of Byzantine churches and monasteries recognised by UNESCO for their exceptional painted interiors. The property comprises ten churches and monasteries decorated with murals dating from the 11th to the 16th centuries.

Panagia tou Araka in Lagoudera and Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis near Kakopetria are among the best-known sites.

These monuments provide cultural stops within broader mountain itineraries. Visitors can combine church visits with hiking, village exploration and local food experiences.

The churches also connect religious heritage with the surrounding landscape, creating opportunities for travellers to explore several communities during a single journey.

Nature Trails Expand Mountain Tourism

Troodos provides a network of nature trails through pine forests, valleys and mountain landscapes. Hiking is one of the special-interest activities promoted through Heartland of Legends, alongside climbing and birdwatching.

Nature trails can connect villages with forest areas and cultural sites, giving visitors the option of combining walking with heritage exploration.

The mountain environment also provides a cooler alternative to summer coastal travel and supports outdoor activities across different seasons.

2026 Supports Experiential Tourism

The Deputy Ministry of Tourism’s 2026 action plan includes continued development and promotion of Heartland of Legends as part of its special-interest tourism programme. The plan allocates €1.23 million to promoting special-interest tourism, including cultural, cycling, diving, sports and other tourism segments.

A separate 2026 grant scheme supports experiential workshops along the Heartland of Legends route, covering traditional crafts, agricultural and livestock processing and wine gastronomy.

The measures connect tourism promotion with local businesses and producers.

Troodos Communities Gain Visitor Opportunities

The Heartland programme provides a platform for villages, communities, producers and tourism businesses to promote their experiences. The national Tourism Strategy 2035 specifically identifies the route as a tool for spreading tourism benefits into rural and mountainous areas.

Visitors can stay in agrotourism properties, eat locally produced food, participate in workshops and explore cultural attractions.

This model creates tourism journeys that combine accommodation, food, crafts, heritage and outdoor activities rather than relying on a single attraction.

Cyprus Strengthens Mountain Tourism

Government initiatives in the recent past have kept the Troodos communities and their culture in the limelight. The government organised the third “Troodos 3” event at the Presidential Residence in Troodos in September 2026, which saw the participation of artisans, creators, local businesses and the communities of the mountain regions, and the presentation of local products, flavours and cultural traditions. This initiative represents yet another contemporary case study of the emphasis placed on mountain communities in the country. The Troodos region now has a portfolio of village accommodation, trekking in the mountains, traditional food and drinks, wineries, crafts, and Byzantine culture that can be offered to tourists visiting the area. Fikardou, Kalopanayiotis, Moutoullas, Lagoudera and Kakopetria open the gates to different aspects of the mountainous area. Thus, the Heartland of Legends program is developing a comprehensive inland tourism network of Cyprus involving communities and local businesses in nature and cultural tourism.
