Vienna Airport has established a foundation for managing the increasing volumes of air cargo by partnering with Incheon Airport in South Korea and Korean Air. This collaboration aims to boost joint marketing efforts and create superior cargo services to accommodate the rising need for air cargo space between these two economic regions. The agreements to this effect were inked with Incheon Airport and Korean Air during a trip to Seoul.

“We see an enormous opportunity to further expand our position as the leading air cargo hub to Asia. Korean Air’s decision to increasingly operate cargo flights to Vienna underlines the attractiveness of Vienna Airport and strengthens the economic development of our region. The expansion of our infrastructure is a decisive factor in fulfilling the growing demand for global air transport services between Europe and Asia and offering first-class services for the benefit of our customers”, says Julian Jäger, says Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Flughafen Wien AG, who is pleased with the closer cooperation now with Korean Air and Incheon Airport.

The partnership between Vienna Airport and Incheon Airport, solidified through a Memorandum of Understanding, is a cornerstone of Vienna Airport’s strategy to cement its standing in Asia and evolve into a leading European air cargo hub for goods moving between Asia and Europe. The goal is to forge a beneficial partnership through the exchange of expertise in air cargo operations, including handling processes and logistics systems.

In Seoul, an agreement was also reached to enhance the longstanding collaboration with Korean Air, which has utilized Vienna as a gateway to the Central and Eastern European markets for 20 years. This agreement focuses on joint marketing efforts and knowledge sharing to attract freight forwarders and shippers with tailored services. This pact was formalized in Seoul on Tuesday, 20 February 2024, marking a continuation of Korean Air’s regular cargo flights to Vienna since 2004.

Vienna Airport, strategically located in the heart of Europe, serves as a pivotal cargo hub connecting Central, Eastern, and South-East Europe with Asian markets. Recent infrastructure investments have bolstered its capacity, particularly for pharmaceutical goods, with its Pharma Handling Center providing state-of-the-art conditions for cargo handling. In 2023, the airport handled 245,009 tonnes of air cargo.

Moreover, Vienna AirportCity offers an ideal base for logistics and other industries, featuring direct access to road and rail networks, modern office spaces, ample commercial areas, and close proximity to logistic facilities. With approximately 23,000 employees across 250 companies, it functions like a bustling city, complete with shopping, dining, accommodations, transport services, healthcare, and fitness facilities.
