In 2023, the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority saw a remarkable milestone as it welcomed a total of 50.6 million passengers, establishing an unprecedented travel record across Reagan National and Dulles International airports. This notable accomplishment reflects the robust demand witnessed at both airports, culminating in a new passenger record at Reagan National and a record for international passengers at Dulles International.

“Setting a new record is a remarkable accomplishment that can be credited to continuing recovery from the COVID pandemic and the hard work of our airport team and their partners,” said Jack Potter, Airports Authority president and CEO. “We are not slowing down as upgrades continue for our customers at Reagan National, as well as a new concourse at Dulles International. Our team thrives on recruiting new airline service and finding new ways to provide an outstanding travel experience while planning to meet the region’s long-term transportation needs.”

Reagan National 2023 Performance:

In 2023, Reagan National shattered its previous passenger traffic record, welcoming a staggering 25.5 million travelers. This marked a remarkable 6.2 percent increase over the previous year’s record, despite operational adjustments made for a runway rehabilitation project and capacity constraints at New York City airports. Enhancing the passenger journey, the ongoing DCA Reimagined initiative aims to revamp Terminal 2 amenities, enrich shopping and dining choices, and introduce innovative relaxation spaces across gates and terminals.

Dulles International 2023 Performance:

Emerging as the nation’s swiftest-growing international gateway, Dulles International achieved a significant milestone in 2023, handling 9.3 million international passengers – a striking 26.9 percent surge from 2022. When combined with domestic traffic, the airport recorded a total of 25.1 million passengers throughout the year. This surge owes much to a robust resurgence in travel demand, leading to the introduction of eight new airlines offering nonstop services to various global destinations in the past two years. With additional flight expansions slated for 2024, the airport’s roster will encompass 42 airlines serving 139 destinations, comprising 80 domestic and 59 international routes.

The growth trajectory is set to continue into 2024, with the introduction of new services:

– American Airlines will commence flights to Bermuda and Hyannis, Massachusetts.
– AeroMexico will offer service to Mexico City.
– Allegiant Air will launch routes to Punta Gorda, Florida.
– Southern Airways Express will connect to Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
– Southwest Airlines will add Phoenix to its destinations.
– Sun Country Airlines will initiate service to Minneapolis.
– Swiss International Air Lines will commence flights to Zurich.
– United Airlines will introduce routes to Anchorage and Vancouver.
– United Express will expand its network to include Philadelphia, Harrisburg, State College, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Additionally, Lufthansa plans to enhance its Munich route on June 1 by upgrading to the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft.
