The public has been warned to avoid unnecessary travel on Thursday as roads in Northern Ireland will not be gritted due to widespread strike action.
About 170,000 workers may walk out in what unions have said is the largest day of strike action ever taken in the history of Northern Ireland.
Trade unions representing nurses, teachers, public transport workers, police staff and civil servants are taking part in a day. It could bring the province to a standstill.
A weather warning for snow and ice is in place for Thursday. Department for Infrastructure advised road users to avoid travelling.
“With cold weather being forecast for this week, the industrial action will cause disruption to our winter gritting service,” a spokesperson said.
The announcement has added to the mounting sense of pressure ahead of the strikes.
Ulster University economist Dr Esmond Birnie has said could cost Northern Ireland around £10m.
Retail NI chief executive Glyn Roberts said Northern Ireland “cannot afford” this level of strike action on a regular basis. The organisation leaves the decision on whether to remain open or closed up to individual members.
All five of the health trusts have issued a statement saying they are “deeply concerned” about the strike’s impact on services.
Patient Client Council said it will have a “profound impact” on healthcare services and patients.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said patients should only dial 999 on Thursday in a genuine emergency.
