Even though July is coming to an end, there is still plenty of time for tourism in Wisconsin this summer. This follows the summer of 2022, when La Crosse County had a double-digit increase in tourism-related earnings.

According to state tourism statistics, the county saw an economic impact of $489 million from visitor expenditure, an increase of 13% from the previous year. Since the COVID-19 pandemic has ended, according to A.J. Frels of the Explore La Crosse bureau, individuals have been compelled to visit other parts of Wisconsin.

“People were pent up, they wanted to get out,” Frels tells WIZM News. “Leisure travel came back, with just fantastic response. We were the type of, and continue to be the type of destination the people enjoy, they could get out and do those outdoor activities.”

According to Frels, the tourism industry contributes to close to 4000 jobs in the county. La Crosse County, which holds stable at number 9, continues to be among Wisconsin’s top 10 counties for tourism revenue.
This week, large riverboats will continue to stop in La Crosse. The American Queen paddlewheeler, which was just at Riverside Park last week, will return on Saturday. The Viking cruise liner is scheduled to arrive on Friday.

It’s a fantastic time for tourism in general for several cities in the area, including the Twin Cities and Chicago, according to Frels, who also adds that passengers riding the huge boats appreciate the city’s downtown.

According to state statistics, direct tourist spending in La Crosse County increased by almost $300 million in 2022, or 16%, over the previous year.
