As airport employees seek better working and payment conditions, the 27-nation bloc often encounters strikes. As Christmas and New Year are around the corner, the situation may impact holiday travel.

These industrial actions impact the social order. Travelling within the state and the zone may face disruption due to congestion or lack of workers.

Here’s a breakdown of the strikes and countries where there will be airport strikes.

It includes how airports can deal with more traffic or less personnel, potentially leaving travellers stranded.

Spain: Airport calls for strike during Christmas and New Year

Iberia ground services staff may be walking out from December 29 to January 1 and again from January 4 to 7. It affecting all airports where the country’s flag carrier operates.

Workers are protesting working conditions and expressing their discontent to the planned outsourcing of workers to other companies. A news agency reports this.

Despite Iberia workers, the private security staff at Alicante-Elche airport can be going on a strike from December 15 to 17, 19 and December 22 to 31. There may be walkouts again next year from January 1 to 14.

The workers will be going on a strike for two hours on these days from 8.45am- 9.45am and from 6pm-7pm. It may impact security controls and baggage handling.

France: Air Traffic Controllers to strike

These workers will go on a strike this Monday, December 18. It may cause the cancellation of up to half of flights at airports like Paris Orly and Brest.

There may be cancellations between the evening of December 17 and the morning of December 19.

Strikers are protesting the new rules requiring controllers to give 48 hours’ notice before the strike action happens. It is a practice which the law in countries such as Spain, Portugal, and Greece regulates.

French train workers have agreed not to strike over Christmas and New Year, relieving holiday travellers from cancellations and congestion.

However, potential walkouts can occur after the holiday period due to ongoing disputes over pay.

UK: Northern Ireland Public Transport workers to strike this Friday

Following strikes that occurred last Friday, this region will have its impact by another one scheduled for December 22. This is because workers protest over a proposed pay freeze.

The strike may lead to delays and cancellations on trains and buses, particularly impacting school transport and local businesses.

Authorities advise travellers to collect information about updates and check the status of their flights before travelling. This is because strikes can occur very often and there may be last-minute cancellations.

In addition, travellers should purchase travel insurance when travelling. It is a practice that can protect them from expenses of missed or delayed flights.

Several companies offer some of the best deals so that travellers can have a safe and merry European holiday.
