Cambodia Highlights Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Growth at ADB High-Level Investor Roundtable, Driving Investment, Green Travel and Year-Round Tourism

In response to the invitation extended by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), His Excellency Hout Hak, who is the Minister of Tourism, made an appearance at the High-Level Roundtable on “ASEAN Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Investment Outlook 2030.” This high-level roundtable was attended by stakeholders from various sectors, such as government, investors, tourism boards, chambers of commerce, and professionals, and it focused on ways in which the growth of sustainable tourism and investment in tourism can be fostered in Cambodia.

This stakeholder engagement session reiterated Cambodia’s resolve to nurture its tourism sector through economic, environmental, and social development strategies.

Leveraging Cambodia’s Tourism Assets for Sustainable Growth

H.E. the Minister emphasized Cambodia’s abundant tourism potential, encompassing culture, heritage, natural landscapes, and green tourism opportunities. These attractions align with global trends that increasingly prioritize responsible travel, eco-tourism, and immersive experiences. By leveraging these assets, Cambodia aims to foster sustainable tourism growth, attracting high-value international visitors while supporting the conservation of natural and cultural resources.

Investments in integrated infrastructure and enhanced connectivity across the country are critical to this growth, reducing travel times, improving visitor convenience, and enabling broader access to destinations. These improvements also encourage longer stays and higher per-visitor spending, ensuring that tourism contributes meaningfully to Cambodia’s economic resilience.

“Visit Cambodia in the Green Season” Campaign Promotes Year-Round Tourism

A centerpiece of Cambodia’s sustainable tourism strategy is the “Visit Cambodia in the Green Season” campaign, designed to transform the traditionally low-season months into a vibrant period for travel. Running from May to October, the initiative emphasizes natural beauty, eco-tourism experiences, and local cultural engagement, providing visitors with unique opportunities to explore the country during the rainy season.

The campaign is guided by six key messages: Must See, Must Stay, Must Taste, Must Visit, Must Try, and Must Buy, aiming to enhance the visitor experience while supporting sustainable tourism growth. By showcasing green landscapes, ecologically sensitive destinations, and local traditions, Cambodia is positioning itself as a year-round, resilient tourism destination that aligns with global sustainability standards.

Tourism Investment as a Driver of Economic and Social Resilience

H.E. the Minister highlighted that tourism investment contributes not only to GDP growth but also to job creation, community development, and improved livelihoods. Investments in hotels, tour operators, transport, cultural attractions, and local service providers enable equitable distribution of tourism benefits, ensuring that economic gains extend to communities in urban and rural areas alike.

Sustainable investment practices, including eco-friendly accommodation, renewable energy use, and low-impact tourism activities, support both economic resilience and environmental conservation, positioning Cambodia as a leader in responsible tourism development within ASEAN.

Enhancing Regional Competitiveness Through Public-Private Partnerships

The roundtable highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration in promoting resilient tourism growth. By engaging investors, tourism operators, and government agencies, Cambodia is creating a robust platform for strategic development, innovation, and quality assurance.

These partnerships support the development of high-value travel products, including cultural tours, eco-lodges, and experiential travel packages, which attract international tourists seeking meaningful and sustainably responsible experiences. This approach strengthens the long-term growth prospects of Cambodia’s tourism sector.

Supporting ASEAN Tourism Development Vision 2030

Cambodia’s initiatives are aligned with the ASEAN Tourism Development Vision 2030, which emphasises sustainable, resilient, and inclusive tourism growth across member countries. By adopting best practices in environmental protection, community engagement, and infrastructure development, Cambodia contributes to regional tourism competitiveness while promoting socioeconomic resilience.

Policies that encourage year-round visitation, high-value spending, and multi-destination travel position Cambodia to attract international investment and strengthen ASEAN’s presence in the global tourism market.

Driving Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Growth for the Future

The combination of strategic investment, infrastructure improvements, and the Green Season campaign illustrates Cambodia’s commitment to sustainable and resilient tourism growth. By targeting high-value visitors, promoting eco-tourism, and extending tourism activity across seasons, Cambodia aims to enhance both economic outcomes and environmental stewardship.

The ADB roundtable reinforced the role of international investment in supporting these initiatives, highlighting opportunities for investors to participate in a rapidly growing sustainable tourism market while contributing to community development and regional resilience.

Cambodia Poised as a Sustainable Tourism Leader in ASEAN

Cambodia’s tourism industry continues to make great strides through such efforts by incorporating green tourism practices, infrastructure development, and investment promotion, creating opportunities for sustainable and resilient growth in the future. The “Visit Cambodia in the Green Season” program along with public-private partnerships and being in line with the ASEAN Tourism Vision 2030 are some examples of efforts being made by the Kingdom of Cambodia to establish itself as an all-season, high-end tourism destination.
