Scotland is by now world famous both as a tourist destination, as well as a source of high-quality food and drink. The expectation is that by better combining and highlighting both the sectors, their financial potential will double.
The action plan was declared by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon while visiting the Isle of Arran with the Scottish cabinet, to celebrate the beginning of national food and drink fortnight.
Measures in the plan comprise the setting up of a food tourism apprenticeship programme; enhanced marketing for food and drink tourism; developing the next generation of agri-tourism monitor farms; and a further programme displaying Scotland events; bringing regional suppliers and buyers under one roof. Also, there will be support given to the top 100 visitor attractions to achieve ‘Taste Our Best’, the quality assurance accreditation scheme promoting local sourcing.
Ms Sturgeon commented: “Scotland is already renowned as the land of food and drink, with our quality produce known throughout the world. With around £1 billion being spent on food and drink by visitors each year, the economic benefits are clear. This action plan will bring together everyone in the food and tourism sectors to build on that success story.”
