State and international borders in Australia are reopening. The travel sector is back on the table, just in time for the holidays. This signals the start of the road to economic recovery for the tourism industry, out of the latest COVID-19 lockdowns.
To all accommodation providers, this however presents fresh challenges. Travellers’ expectations have changed. Social interactions look different – even since this time last year. Besides, accommodation providers must keep an eye to the changes in the regulations of COVID-19 and become accustomed to their offerings to make sure compliance and safety are maintained.
For ‘peer to peer’ accommodation businesses, these challenges are even greater, such as individuals or families who rent their homes through Airbnb. Airbnb is no stranger to major disruption. Airbnb transformed how and where people stay when travelling from 2008. They have seen business growing like never before, people are taking the benefit of not being anchored to major cities and resorting to different living styles. The original ethos of Airbnb promised travellers they can ‘Belong Anywhere’ and enjoy ‘Living like a Local’. Delivering on this ethos meant guests making social connections with hosts and locals as well as providing a sense of homeliness which is not found in hotels.
