Sri Lanka’s recently chosen brand ambassador for tourism promotions and the ex-cricketer, Mr. Sanath Jayasuriya, on Monday, had met with Gopal Baglay, the Indian High Commissioner based in Colombo.
The High Commission of India and its official Twitter handle, explained that the meeting primarily aimed on fortifying the relation between both India and Sri Lanka and endorsing tourism as an instrument for financial revival.
For the tourism promotions in Sri Lanka, the erstwhile Sri Lankan cricketer, Sanath Jayasuriya, has been named as its brand ambassador.
The former cricketer, in a tweet on August 5, had accepted an honorary position as tourism ambassador and stated that over three million livelihoods in Sri Lanka are based on tourism.
He said that as over 3 million livelihoods are dependent on tourism and it’s almost certainly the best way that they can come out of the financial predicament. This is the reason that he accepted the role of an ambassador. He has also invited all Sri Lankans, based in the country as well as abroad to help them in promoting their motherland.
From the onset of 2022, the country has seen escalating monetary disaster and the government has failed to pay on its foreign debts. The United Nations has cautioned that 5.7 million people need instant humanitarian help.
India under its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy has come forward to help the in debt island country always. Of late, India has extended 8 Lines of Credit (LOCs) to Sri Lanka.
