Tanzania’s Mapito Safari Camp Celebrates One-Year Milestone With Global Recognition and New Safari Growth Plans
One year after welcoming its first guests, Mapito Safari Camp, Serengeti, Autograph Collection, is celebrating a successful first year of operations as Tanzania’s first Marriott-branded safari camp. The milestone highlights a year of remarkable growth, strong community partnerships and a continued commitment to conservation-led luxury travel. The celebration comes as the camp looks ahead to the upcoming launch of Mereshi Plains, Autograph Collection, scheduled to open in October 2026.
The achievement follows a landmark period for Mapito Safari Camp, which has gained international recognition after being awarded Tanzania’s Leading Luxury Tented Safari Camp 2026 at the prestigious World Travel Awards. The recognition reflects the camp’s growing reputation for delivering a high-end safari experience while supporting the natural environment and surrounding communities.
Set within the Ikoma Wildlife Management Area (WMA), a community-operated conservation zone connected to the wider Serengeti ecosystem, Mapito Safari Camp offers guests an immersive wilderness experience surrounded by open landscapes and free-roaming wildlife. The location provides year-round opportunities to witness Tanzania’s iconic wildlife, while the western Serengeti corridor brings additional seasonal highlights during the annual Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest and zebra travel through the region.
The luxury camp features an exclusive collection of 15 one- and two-bedroom tented suites along with a two-bedroom villa, creating an intimate safari setting for travellers seeking privacy and comfort. Each accommodation includes access to a private luxury Land Cruiser, a dedicated safari guide and personal butler service, allowing guests to enjoy tailored wildlife adventures across the Serengeti at their preferred pace.

Beyond traditional daytime game drives, Mapito Safari Camp provides guests with unique opportunities to discover the wilderness after sunset through night safari experiences. These excursions reveal a different side of the Serengeti, offering encounters with nocturnal animals and the hidden activities of the ecosystem after dark.
After exploring the wilderness, guests can relax with wellness experiences at the camp’s spa, enjoy views from the infinity pool or experience locally inspired farm-to-table cuisine prepared with fresh ingredients from the camp’s own vegetable garden. The camp’s retractable tent roofs also allow visitors to sleep beneath the vast Serengeti sky, creating a closer connection with nature while maintaining luxury standards.
A dedicated concierge team further enhances the guest journey by arranging personalised experiences, from pre-arrival planning to customised safari adventures designed around individual interests.
However, Mapito Safari Camp was developed with a purpose extending beyond luxury tourism. The camp was created around the belief that successful tourism must benefit both visitors and the communities that protect and preserve the destinations they call home.

Through collaboration with the Give a Future Foundation, Mapito has contributed to several initiatives supporting education, healthcare and employment opportunities across the Serengeti region. At the Hope for Girls & Women Centre, young women receive educational support, mentorship and vocational training designed to create pathways into future careers.
The partnership also includes practical hospitality training delivered through Mapito Safari Camp, where participants gain valuable skills in areas such as safari guiding, culinary operations and guest services. English language education and professional development opportunities further strengthen their ability to build sustainable careers within Tanzania’s expanding tourism sector.
Healthcare support has also become a major part of the camp’s community commitment. Through ongoing assistance for the Robanda Medical Clinic, local communities have gained improved access to medical care, including support for a full-time doctor and essential medicines. Specialist medical outreach programmes have provided free consultations, treatments and surgeries to families living near the camp.
In addition, a dedicated sickle cell programme has been introduced to help children receive early diagnosis, continuous treatment and long-term healthcare support, addressing an important medical need within surrounding communities.
Mapito Safari Camp’s positive impact also extends to employment and local economic development. During the construction phase, the project generated more than 250 jobs, while today approximately 90% of the workforce is Tanzanian, including members of the senior leadership team.
The camp has also placed strong emphasis on celebrating local identity through its design and operations. Construction and interior furnishings incorporated locally sourced materials, while Tanzanian craftsmanship, cultural experiences and artisan partnerships are integrated throughout the guest experience.
As Mapito Safari Camp enters its second year, the property continues to represent a new model of luxury safari tourism in Tanzania — one that combines exceptional wilderness experiences, conservation awareness and meaningful community investment. With the planned opening of Mereshi Plains, Autograph Collection in October 2026, the brand is preparing to expand its presence while continuing to highlight Tanzania’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Rishen Patel, Founder and Managing Director of Mapito Safari Camp, said:
“As a Tanzanian, this project holds a special place in my heart. When we opened Mapito Safari Camp, our ambition was to create a safari experience that reflected the extraordinary character of the Serengeti while building long-term relationships with the communities around us.
Over the past year, we have seen how hospitality can create opportunities beyond the guest experience. Through Delaware Investments and working alongside the Give a Future Foundation and our local partners, we have invested in programmes that support education, healthcare and skills development, while continuing to learn from the communities we are privileged to work with. As we look ahead to the next chapter, our commitment remains the same: to develop hospitality experiences that create lasting value for both our guests and our neighbours.”
The anniversary milestone also signals the beginning of a new phase of expansion. In October 2026, Mereshi Plains, Serengeti, Autograph Collection is set to welcome guests as the brand’s second safari camp in the Serengeti. Following the success and vision established at Mapito, the upcoming property will continue to blend world-class hospitality standards with immersive design, strong community connections and a lasting commitment to supporting the region’s future.
