Greece’s Ios Island is a sustainability pioneer for the tourism industry with green technology, roads, and modern ports. Once this area is developed, tourists will have new ways to experience the offerings of the Ios Island beyond the beach and bar scene. Now, sustainability is the goal for the Ios Island. This is done by the combination of modern infrastructure and/or services in conjunction with improved systems for the environment and increased sport and cultural activity.

Located in the Cyclades, Ios has long attracted international visitors with its whitewashed villages, beautiful beaches and energetic summer atmosphere. However, the island is now focusing on a broader tourism strategy designed to protect natural resources, improve daily life for residents and offer travellers more diverse experiences throughout the year.

The island’s development plan connects tourism growth with modern infrastructure, environmental responsibility and stronger community services. The approach aims to ensure that increasing visitor demand does not place pressure on local resources while creating better facilities for both travellers and permanent residents.

Ios Strengthens Environmental Protection Through Water and Waste Management Projects

Environmental sustainability has become one of the main priorities in Ios’ tourism development strategy. The island is upgrading critical water and wastewater infrastructure to support long-term growth while protecting its fragile island environment.

Another major environmental project focuses on the construction of a new sewage network in Mylopotas, one of Ios’ most important tourism areas. The project has a budget of around €5 million and is expected to become operational in 2027.

The new system will include sewage pipelines, pumping stations and connections to the island’s existing wastewater treatment infrastructure. The project is designed to meet current visitor needs while preparing Ios for future tourism growth.

Port Expansion Improves Travel Connectivity and Visitor Access

As an island destination, Ios depends heavily on maritime connectivity. The port serves as the main arrival point for visitors and plays a crucial role in supporting local economic activity.

To improve access and operations, Ios is expanding its port facilities through a major infrastructure project with a budget of around €11.3 million.

The development includes a new 183-metre berth frontage, additional stern-mooring positions for conventional passenger ferries and high-speed vessels, as well as expanded land areas to improve vehicle circulation and port efficiency.

The upgraded port infrastructure is expected to create a smoother arrival experience for travellers while improving transportation links for residents and businesses.

The investment reflects the island’s wider goal of developing stronger foundations for sustainable tourism growth.

Better Roads and Sustainable Mobility Create Easier Island Exploration

Transport improvements are also playing an important role in Ios’ transformation. The island has completed upgrades to the Kakovolo-Spithara rural road, improving access to southern areas, including the popular Manganari region.

The project, completed with a budget of approximately €2.23 million, supports safer and more efficient movement across the island. It also encourages visitors to explore areas beyond the main tourism zones.

Ios is also implementing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan focused on improving accessibility and reducing environmental impacts from transportation.

A major addition is the Gaitis-Simosi Museum, which opened in September 2024 after nearly three decades of development. The museum has become a new cultural centre for the island, hosting exhibitions, educational activities, film screenings and cultural programmes.

The island is also strengthening its cultural calendar through the Ios Festival, which brings together contemporary art, music, photography, cinema and community activities.

Through these initiatives, Ios is creating new reasons for travellers to visit beyond the traditional summer season.

Sports development is another key element of Ios’ tourism strategy. The island is using sporting events and new facilities to attract visitors with different interests.

Ios is also moving forward with plans for a new indoor sports hall. The project includes a fully equipped basketball court, spectator seating and facilities designed for accessibility.

A future sports centre is also planned in the Kambos area as part of broader efforts to develop modern recreational infrastructure.
