Air Canada and United Expand North American Connectivity with New 2027 Routes

The addition of more flights will become a reality between Canada and the US come the 2027 summer travel season after Air Canada and United Airlines introduce new flight schedules and enhanced cooperation across the border. Both airlines have signed a renewed agreement that entails expanding the Transborder Joint Business Agreement, covering over 1,200 connecting flights between Canada and the US. The deal, revealed on 16 October 2026, is still pending regulatory clearance from Canada’s regulators. The partnership brings together increased network development and airline cooperation, thus allowing more travel choices for visitors heading to various cities in the US and Canada, as well as international airports. New flights will operate out of Toronto, Montréal, Edmonton, Louisville, Indianapolis, Newark, St. John’s, Ottawa and Québec City, while extra capacity will serve some current flights.
Air Canada Adds Three New US Destinations for Summer 2027
Air Canada will introduce three new transborder services from Canada, extending its access to American destinations from its existing network.
The airline plans to launch flights between Toronto and Louisville from April 28, 2027. The service will initially operate several times a week before increasing to daily frequency in May, with the seasonal schedule running until October 31, 2027.
The new connection will give travellers from Toronto direct access to Louisville, Kentucky, a destination known for its bourbon heritage, cultural attractions and the Kentucky Derby. Visitors can explore the city’s historic districts, museums and waterfront attractions.

Montréal will receive a new direct connection to Indianapolis, with daily flights scheduled to operate between June 1 and September 30, 2027. Indianapolis offers visitors access to sporting attractions, museums, cultural districts and the wider Indiana tourism circuit.
The third route will connect Edmonton with Newark from June 1 to October 17, 2027, operating four times weekly. Newark Liberty International Airport provides access to the New York metropolitan region, allowing Canadian visitors to connect with Manhattan, its cultural institutions, shopping districts and major visitor attractions.

Air Canada will also increase capacity between Edmonton and San Francisco by deploying the larger Airbus A220 aircraft. The additional capacity will support travel between Alberta and California, including access to San Francisco’s waterfront, museums, neighbourhoods and wider Bay Area attractions.
United Airlines Expands Connections to Canadian Destinations
United Airlines will introduce additional services linking American aviation hubs with Canadian cities during summer 2027.
The airline plans to launch seasonal flights between Newark and St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The route will restore a direct connection between the eastern United States and Newfoundland’s capital, providing another option for travellers exploring the province’s coastal landscapes, historic sites and outdoor tourism attractions.
United will also introduce new services from Denver to Ottawa and Québec City. These routes will connect two Canadian destinations with one of the airline’s major US hubs.
Ottawa offers visitors national museums, Parliament Hill, historic neighbourhoods and cultural attractions along the Ottawa River. Québec City, meanwhile, attracts international visitors through its historic architecture, fortified old town and distinctive French-Canadian heritage.
United will increase flights between Washington, D.C., and Québec City and expand daily seat capacity between Denver and Winnipeg by 65 per cent. The Winnipeg expansion will improve access to Manitoba’s capital, which serves as a gateway to regional cultural attractions and outdoor experiences.

More Than 1,200 Itineraries Strengthen Cross-Border Travel
The expanded agreement brings together the airlines’ networks through more than 1,200 integrated Canada-US connecting itineraries.
Passengers will have access to coordinated schedules, integrated through-fares and connections across both carriers’ networks. These arrangements allow eligible travellers to book connecting journeys under a combined itinerary rather than purchasing separate flight segments.
The partnership also provides coordinated rebooking arrangements during disruptions and reciprocal loyalty benefits. These provisions are relevant to international visitors connecting through Canadian and American gateways to reach destinations beyond their initial arrival cities.
Since the joint business arrangement began in 2022, the airlines report that 20 new transborder routes have been created and more than 4.3 million passengers have travelled jointly on their networks. Their combined operations serve 10 Canadian gateways.
The agreement also supports connectivity for communities outside Canada’s largest aviation hubs, including Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa, Québec City, Regina, St. John’s and Winnipeg.
For international tourists, these connections can provide additional routing options when travelling between Canada and the United States or continuing onwards through either airline’s wider network.
Regulatory Approval Remains a Key Step
Air Canada and United Expand North American Connectivity with New 2027 Routes. Although the expanded network has been developed, the re-negotiated agreement is still pending final approval from the regulator. Air Canada and United Airlines have filed their revised joint business arrangement agreement with the Canadian regulator – Transport Canada – for assessment of compliance with the provisions of the Canada Transportation Act. In its letter of October 16, 2026, the Canadian regulator indicated that it was reviewing the proposed joint business arrangement through the process of public interest assessment. This process will examine the economic implications and the effects of the proposal on competition and the interests of Canadian consumers. The Government of Canada has launched a consultation process, in which airlines, consumer groups and the general public will be invited to comment until November 15, 2026. The assessment process will make the decision whether to approve the expanded cooperation as is, to conditionally approve or to reject it altogether. The listed routes are the next step in Air Canada and United Airlines’ plan to expand connectivity between Canada and the US in the summer of 2027.
