The recent heavy rains have caused significant damage to Rio de Janeiro, according to information the fire department gave to the media. The death toll is at least 11.
The strong downpour caused numerous deaths from landslides, drownings, and electrocutions in Rio de Janeiro’s northern areas, which were especially hard hit. Although the woman’s whereabouts were unknown, firefighters persisted in looking for her after her car washed away by a river during the deluge.
The storm’s impact was so great that water levels rose to the roofs of cars in certain locations along Avenida de Brasil, the city’s main thoroughfare. Mayor Eduardo Paes responded to the situation by declaring a state of emergency and advising the populace to remain indoors for their own safety as well as to avoid interfering with the ongoing rescue operations.
The heavy downpour also affected the transportation systems, resulting in the temporary closure of several metro stations and twelve bus lines because of flooded tracks. The amount of precipitation in a single day in certain areas of the city was equal to the average precipitation for the month of January. Firefighters in Rio de Janeiro were overloaded with over 200 storm-related incident reports, making it difficult for them to react.
One of the places that was badly flooded during the storm was the basement offices of the Ronaldo Gazolla hospital; the Acari neighborhood was hardest hit. The flooding also seriously damaged local businesses that were close by.
In response, a national body in charge of monitoring natural disasters informed eight surrounding towns in the state of Rio de Janeiro of the high risk of landslides. The warning highlights how dangerous the area’s aftermath of the heavy rains still is and how crucial it is that everyone in the area stay alert and prepared.
