The inauguration of Copa Airlines’ services at Florianópolis-Hercílio Luz International Airport (FLN) is hailed as a significant achievement for Santa Catarina by Fábio Marques, the COO of Zurich Airport Brazil. From June 25, the Panama-based airline will connect Florianopolis with the rest of the world, marking it as the airline’s seventh Brazilian destination. With flights scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, this new route is anticipated to facilitate convenient one-stop connections for Santa Catarina’s passengers to North America, Central America, and the Caribbean through Panama.

During Routes Americas 2024, Marques highlighted the importance of this development for the international exposure of Florianopolis Airport, emphasizing its role in providing efficient connections across continents, thus shortening travel times without necessitating more than two stops. This service is expected not only to enhance travel convenience but also to boost inbound tourism to Florianópolis, a city celebrated for its pristine beaches, Azorean architecture, and ecotourism opportunities.

The introduction of Copa Airlines is part of the airport’s broader strategy to expand its network, which has recently seen the addition of new routes including flights from Lima, Peru by Sky Airline, and services from Buenos Aires, Argentina by JetSMART. Additionally, the airport has experienced increased capacity to Chile and added flights to Montevideo, Uruguay by Sky and Azul.

In January 2024, FLN managed to accommodate 131,000 international passengers, witnessing a 7.4% increase in international capacity year-on-year, as per OAG Schedules Analyser data, positioning it as Brazil’s third-largest airport in terms of international traffic. Marques pointed out the potential for further expansion, noting Lima as an underserved market and the opportunity to establish connections with other South American destinations, as well as secondary cities in Chile and locations in Argentina such as Córdoba and Rosario.
