The newly introduced Boten-Vientiane intercity train service began operations with the first C95 train departing from Boten Station at 8:00 am local time. The launch represents another major development in Laos’ modern transport system as the country continues to increase the use of railway infrastructure for passenger and commercial movement.

The service has been designed to provide a more efficient travel option for people living in northern Laos who need to reach Vientiane for work, business, education, government services or family visits. Previously, long-distance journeys between these regions often required more time and complex travel arrangements. The new railway connection offers a quicker and more comfortable alternative.

The new C95 and C96 train services operate along the Laos section of the China-Laos Railway, linking several important destinations between the northern border area and the capital.

The morning C95 service starts from Boten at 8:00 am and arrives at Vientiane Station at 11:47 am, allowing passengers to complete the journey before midday. The return C96 train leaves Vientiane at 2:05 pm and reaches Boten at 6:32 pm, making a full-day return trip possible.

The train stops at six major stations along the route, including Boten, Nateuy, Muang Xay, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane. These stops connect key tourism destinations, local communities and commercial centres, creating improved access for both residents and visitors.

The launch of the new route also highlights the growing importance of the China-Laos Railway as a national transport backbone. Since its opening, the railway has transformed travel patterns in Laos by providing a modern alternative for both domestic and international passengers.

The 1,035-kilometre railway line, which connects Kunming in China’s Yunnan Province with Vientiane in Laos, officially opened on 3 December 2021. The project created a major land transportation corridor linking southwestern China with the Indochina Peninsula and improving regional connectivity.

Passenger demand on the railway has increased steadily since operations began. International passenger services started on 13 April 2023, allowing travellers to cross the Laos-China border by rail and expanding opportunities for regional tourism and business travel.

Official figures show that railway passenger traffic has recorded significant growth. Monthly passenger numbers have increased from approximately 600,000 passengers after the railway opened to a peak of 2.25 million passengers during later periods of operation.

During the first eight months of the year, the railway handled 972 international passenger trains, carrying around 244,000 cross-border passenger journeys. The figure represented an increase of more than 50 per cent compared with the previous year, reflecting rising demand for cross-border rail travel.

Alongside passenger growth, freight operations have also expanded rapidly. The railway has become an important route for moving goods between Laos, China and wider regional markets.

By 18 August 2026, the China-Laos Railway had transported more than 90 million tonnes of cargo, including over 21 million tonnes of international cross-border freight. More than 80,000 freight train services had operated on the line, including over 23,000 cross-border freight trains.

The continued expansion of passenger services demonstrates Laos’ efforts to maximise the benefits of railway infrastructure. The new Boten-Vientiane connection is expected to support domestic tourism, improve access to popular destinations such as Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng, and encourage stronger economic activity along the railway corridor.

As Laos continues developing its rail network, the China-Laos Railway is becoming a vital link for passengers, businesses and tourists. The introduction of the new intercity service marks another milestone in improving national mobility while strengthening Laos’ position within the wider regional transportation network.
