As the Middle East hosts its 50th UN Tourism Commission, it highlights key strides in innovation and investment, shaping the future.

The Regional Commission for the Middle East recently hosted high-level representatives from thirteen Member States, which included eight Tourism Ministers. During the reception, the UN Tourism Secretary-General extended a warm invitation to all members to celebrate the Commission’s Golden Jubilee. He highlighted the collaborative efforts spanning 50 sessions that have significantly expanded and enhanced the region’s tourism industry.

Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili provided Members with an update on the Organization’s work since the Commission last met (Jordan, June 2023), with special attention to key priorities of tourism education, jobs and investments. Opening the meeting he said: “Now, we can confidently say that the Middle East is a true global tourism leader. Not just in terms of arrivals, but the region is influencing our sector’s development everywhere in the world. It is a hub of tourism innovation and education. And it is a leading investor, backing big ideas and ambitious projects with the power to transform tourism at every level.”

Innovative and Resilient Tourism Development
Post the presentations by the Secretary-General and the Regional Director for the Middle East, discussions pivoted towards fostering a more innovative, diverse, and robust tourism sector. The discussions underscored the UN Tourism’s dedication to enhancing resilience and unlocking new opportunities through diversification. The discussions highlighted the considerable prospects of wellness tourism in the region and underscored the critical role of gastronomic tourism in rural development and preserving cultural heritage. In Muscat, Secretary-General Pololikashvili personally handed a brochure on Gastronomy Tourism to the Omani Minister of Tourism and Heritage.

Education and Investment Priorities
The Middle East has positioned itself as a premier destination for educational excellence and investment opportunities within the tourism sector. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with UN Tourism, is spearheading initiatives to provide advanced professional education and training for thousands of workers in the sector, notably through the newly established Riyadh School of Hospitality. Furthermore, the region has announced 254 greenfield projects between 2018 and 2023, which involve a total capital investment of USD 15.2 billion. A special Conference titled “Investing in Tourism: Opportunities and Challenges for Sustainable Financing” is scheduled for the second day of the Commission.

Preceding the commission meeting, His Highness Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud Al-Said, Deputy Prime Minister of the Council of Ministers of Sultanate of Oman, hosted a notable gathering with the UN Tourism Secretary-General and delegation leaders. His Excellency embraced the chance to facilitate the milestone 50th meeting of the Regional Commission and its inaugural session under the new branding from UNWTO to UN Tourism.

Also UNWTO has reported significant growth in the Middle East, noting that international tourist arrivals surged to 36% above the pre-pandemic figures during the first quarter of 2024, marking a 4% increase from the same period in 2023. This robust growth follows a stellar 2023, where the Middle East was the first global region to surpass pre-pandemic visitor numbers, showing a 22% increase.

Data from the first quarter of 2024 shows other destinations worldwide also posting impressive figures. Notably, Qatar saw a 177% rise in arrivals compared to the first quarter of 2019, and Saudi Arabia reported a 98% increase.

Furthermore, tourism revenue in the Middle East has also seen a substantial rise, increasing by 33% compared to 2019 figures.
